Job description

Our client, an award-winning independent trust and private office company with a presence in Jersey, London, Geneva, and Mauritius, is seeking a Senior Legal Counsel to join their in-house legal team. In this full-time role, the successful candidate will play a pivotal part in providing comprehensive legal advice to the Board and Senior Management, while also collaborating closely with client-facing teams and external advisers on legal matters surrounding the administration of complex high-value fiduciary structures.

Job Duties
  • Provide expert legal advice on trust, tax, and company law and support the Client Administration teams in the technical drafting of trust instruments and contracts.
  • Manage and mentor junior Legal Counsel, contributing to their professional development.
  • Develop roles within the business such as acting as personal director to corporate trustees/directors or leading client relationships to drive revenue generation.
  • Engage in business development by attending networking events and conferences, as well as supporting new business enquiries.
  • Offer legal advice to the boards of companies and trustees
  • Facilitate transactional support to client-facing teams with regard to entity restructuring, acquisitions, and sales.
  • Prepare instructions for external advisers and serve as the primary contact for engaging external legal advisers.
  • Support legal, tax, and regulatory compliance reporting at Group level, addressing issues such as FATCA, CRS, and Jersey economic substance.
  • Maintain a broad understanding of legal and private client tax matters relevant to all aspects of the client business.
  • Collaborate with the Group Legal team to support legal projects, including GDPR compliance, tax transparency reporting, and updates of legal precedents.
Job Requirements
  • Previous experience in private practice or in-house legal within a similar trust business.
  • Strong understanding of the Codes, guidelines, and expectations of the JFSC.
  • Knowledge of trust and company law, and ideally, UK tax law; sound understanding of fiduciary structures and functions.
  • Ability to quickly learn and become an expert in new legislation or regulations relevant to ATJ.
  • Exceptional attention to detail, analytical skills, and problem-solving capability.
  • Proven integrity and discretion in all professional matters.
  • Strong project management skills, with the ability to identify and handle material risks.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both verbal and written.
