Job summary

SP Manweb, part of SP Energy Networks, is seeking a Senior Protection and Control Design Engineer to deliver safety‑critical protection and substation automation solutions across 132kV networks. Hybrid pattern with occasional travel across the licence area.

You’ll guide protection studies, develop settings, and lead quality checks from feasibility to handover, while mentoring junior engineers and ensuring compliance with standards.

Qualifications

• Degree or HNC/HND in Electrical Engineering or equivalent.
• Extensive experience in high-voltage protection and control on UK 132kV/33kV networks.
• Strong knowledge of protection schemes and interlocking/automation systems.

Responsibilities

• Define protection, control and substation automation requirements across studies and construction strategies.
• Prepare and check detailed designs: protection philosophies, diagrams, schematics and reports.
• Undertake protection studies incl. fault levels, grading and coordination.
• Develop protection settings and communication-assisted systems for feeders, transformers, busbars and customer installations.
• Design IEC 61850-based substation automation solutions and integrate with SCADA/telecoms.
• Ensure designs comply with CDM, standards and safety rules.
• Identify and mitigate safety, quality and cost risks across project lifecycle.
• Provide procurement requirements and evaluation of supplier proposals.
