Job summary

SP Energy Networks in Prenton offers a Senior Protection and Control Design Engineer role driving high‑voltage protection and substation automation across 132kV networks. You will develop protection philosophies, calculate fault levels, and set relay schemes while ensuring safety, compliance and whole‑life value.

You will mentor engineers and coordinate with contractors across the North West region. The role requires UK HV experience, IEC 61850 know‑how, SCADA integration and strong stakeholder

Qualifications

• Extensive experience in high-voltage protection and control engineering on UK 132kV networks.
• Experience carrying out protection studies and relay settings using industry tools.
• Knowledge of IEC 61850, SCADA integration and protection communications.
• Ability to lead multi-disciplinary interfaces with stakeholders.

Responsibilities

• Define protection and substation automation requirements across studies and construction strategies.
• Prepare detailed designs: protection philosophies, diagrams, wiring and reports.
• Develop protection settings and communication-assisted systems for feeders and transformers.
• Review contractor designs, resolve non-conformances and support commissioning.
• Coach engineers and apprentices, ensuring safety by design and governance.
