Job summary

SP Energy Networks is seeking a Senior Main Plant Design Engineer to deliver 132kV/33kV substation designs from feasibility through commissioning across the MANWEB licence area. You will coordinate plant equipment packages, review calculations and drawings, and ensure compliance with safety and CDM regulations.

You will mentor developing engineers, engage with multi-disciplinary teams, and support procurement and technical governance.

Qualifications

• Degree, HNC or HND in Electrical Engineering, or equivalent.
• Significant experience in high-voltage substation main plant design (132kV/33kV).
• Knowledge of transformers, AIS/GIS switchgear, instrument transformers, surge arresters, busbars, earthing and auxiliary plant.
• Experience preparing and reviewing engineering calculations, specifications, reports, drawings and design documentation.
• Good understanding of CDM regulations and safety standards.
• Mentoring developing engineers is desirable; professional registration is advantageous.

Responsibilities

• Deliver engineering designs and technical solutions for 132kV and 33kV substations from feasibility to commissioning.
• Prepare and review design calculations, specifications, drawings, and procurement documentation.
• Ensure designs comply with CDM, SP Energy Networks standards and industry best practice.
• Apply safety by design principles and mitigate asset lifecycle risks.
• Assess supplier and contractor proposals and provide technical recommendations.
• Review designs produced by contractors and ensure technical quality and compliance.
• Collaborate with protection & control, cables, overhead lines, civil, operations and commissioning teams.
• Provide technical support during manufacture, installation, testing and commissioning; mentor engineers.
