Job description
Job Description

We are currently seeking a Senior or Principal Control and Instrumentation (C&I) Engineer to join the Decommissioning market within our Nuclear EMEA business. Ideally based in Manchester; other UK locations can also be considered.

Overview

Reporting to the C&I Capability Lead, you will lead the delivery of design and substantiation packages for process control and mechanical handling systems, including safety instrumented systems, for nuclear decommissioning and waste management projects.

Our focus is on delivering engineering design for plant life extension, waste retrieval, dismantling and demolition projects across their full life cycle, including commissioning and operation. We aim to accelerate change and provide resource augmentation for our clients and partners.

We invest heavily in people, technology, facilities and resources to grow current capabilities and develop new ones, enabling innovative solutions such as robotics and active demonstrators.

Your role
  • Join an established C&I capability in the market and establish a new team in Manchester, complementing our core engineering disciplines.
  • Act as technical lead on projects, managing single‑discipline teams with minimal oversight to deliver solutions on time, within budget, and to quality requirements.
  • Demonstrate understanding of control and instrumentation engineering design across the full project lifecycle, including control system architecture, instrumentation specification and selection.
  • Have experience or awareness of Process Control Design (PID, MPC, APC) and functional safety standards (BS EN 61508, BS EN 61511).
  • Know PLC programming, fieldbus protocols, low‑voltage electrical design, EMC precautions and power supply characteristics.
  • Be enthusiastic about growing the C&I capability within our Engineering group, collaborating across the Decommissioning market and the wider AtkinsRéalis business.
About you
  • Innovator – encourage experimentation, generate new ideas, and challenge others to think differently.
  • Improver – continuously refine processes, methods and tools for greater efficiency.
  • Fully integrated – work closely with counterparts, identify cross‑application of skills, best practice and learning material.
  • Excellent team player – collaborate effectively with market colleagues, wider business colleagues and senior leaders.

Enjoy competitive salaries, employee rewards and a range of benefits tailored to your health, wellbeing, financial and lifestyle choices. Opportunities for training, professional development, hybrid working culture and flexible holiday allowances support a balanced personal and professional life.
