Job summary

TeacherActive is recruiting an experienced SEND Teacher to join a specialist school in South London, supporting autistic learners aged 3–19 with PMLD, SLD and complex needs. The role is full-time and long-term, with a strong emphasis on communication, independence, regulation and emotional wellbeing.

You will plan highly differentiated lessons, develop communication skills, and work with Therapists and support staff to meet EHCP targets, with emphasis on sensory approaches and inclusive teaching

Qualifications

• QTS, QTLS or an equivalent recognised teaching qualification.
• Experience teaching pupils with PMLD, SLD, ASD and complex SEND.
• Experience in a specialist school environment.
• Strong knowledge of sensory curriculum approaches and intensive interaction.
• Experience using communication-focused teaching strategies.
• Knowledge of AAC and alternative communication methods.
• Experience supporting pupils with physical disabilities and complex medical needs.
• Understanding EHCPs and personalised learning.

Responsibilities

• Plan and deliver engaging and highly differentiated lessons for pupils with PMLD, SLD, Autism and complex SEND.
• Develop pupils' communication, independence, sensory regulation, social interaction and physical development.
• Deliver sensory and communication-focused learning tailored to individual needs.
• Use approaches including Makaton, AAC, communication switches and sensory-based strategies.
• Work closely with Speech and Language Therapists, Occupational Therapists, Physiotherapists, healthcare professionals and support staff.
• Contribute towards and review EHCP targets, ensuring they remain meaningful, measurable and achievable.
• Support pupils with sensory and emotional regulation.
• Monitor progress using small-step achievement frameworks.
• Work with pupils who may have physical disabilities and complex medical requirements.
• Understand feeding programmes, mobility support, positioning, wheelchair use and personal care as per care plans.
• Maintain regular communication with parents and carers regarding pupils' development and achievements.
• Create a safe, positive and nurturing classroom environment.
