Job summary

Smart Teachers is recruiting an Interim SENCO for a secondary school in Newham. You will lead SEND provision, oversee EHCPs and annual reviews, and ensure statutory compliance while coordinating multi-agency support.

The role requires QTS and NASENCO or equivalent, plus 2–3 years’ SENCO experience in a mainstream setting. Strong leadership, communication and organisational skills are essential.

Smart Teachers is working in partnership with a welcoming and inclusive mainstream secondary school in Newham seeking an experienced Interim SENCO to provide strong leadership of the school's SEND provision. This is an excellent opportunity for an established SENCO who can make an immediate impact within a supportive leadership team.

The successful candidate will lead the strategic development of SEND across the school, ensuring that students with additional needs receive high-quality support and achieve positive outcomes. You will work closely with senior leaders, teaching staff, parents and external agencies to maintain an inclusive learning environment and ensure statutory responsibilities are met. Interim SENCO appointments are commonly sought to provide experienced leadership and continuity within schools.

The Role
  • Lead and manage the school's SEND provision across Key Stages 3 and 4.
  • Oversee EHCP processes, annual reviews and statutory compliance.
  • Advise and support teachers in delivering high-quality inclusive practice.

The Successful Candidate Will Have
  • Qualified Teacher Status (QTS).
  • The National Award for SEN Coordination (NASENCO) or mandatory SENCO qualification.
  • A minimum of 2-3 years' experience working as a SENCO within a mainstream secondary school.
  • Strong knowledge of current SEND legislation and the SEND Code of Practice.
  • Experience leading EHCP reviews and coordinating multi-agency support.
  • Excellent leadership, organisational and communication skills.
  • The ability to build positive relationships with staff, students and families.
