Job summary

Education Authority (Northern Ireland) is seeking a Classroom Assistant to support pupils with special educational needs in and out of the classroom. The role involves assisting with personalised education plans, managing routines, and promoting independence while safeguarding pupils.

The post requires a Level 2 qualification and experience in a learning environment. You will work under the principal’s guidance to ensure a safe, inclusive learning setting for all pupils.

Qualifications

• Hold a minimum of a Level 2 (or equivalent) qualification in a relevant area from a recognised awarding body.
• Have a minimum of 6 weeks experience in a learning environment or placement, or 12 months experience in a formal learning environment.
• Essential criteria include knowledge of health and safety, child development, and safeguarding.

Responsibilities

• Assist with the support and care of pupil(s) with special educational needs, enabling access to the curriculum and attending to personal needs.
• Develop understanding of individual pupil needs and participate in Education Plan and Care Plan programmes.
• Contribute to inclusion of pupils in mainstream schools under guidance of the class teacher.
• Assist with managing the learning environment: clarify instructions, ensure use of materials, motivate and support pupils, and promote independence.
• Be aware of school policies and maintain confidentiality; establish supportive relationships with pupils.
