Job summary

Education Authority (Northern Ireland) is seeking a Classroom Assistant for Special Educational Needs. The role supports pupils with SEN inside and outside the classroom, implementing education plans and promoting inclusive practice within the school environment.

You will work under the principal and class teacher, assisting with instructional activities, safety, personal care, and administration to help pupils achieve learning goals.

Qualifications

• Must have Level 2 qualification and 6 weeks experience in learning environment or placement, or 12 months in a formal learning environment.
• Core knowledge includes health and safety, development needs of children/young people, and child protection/safeguarding.
• Demonstrate effective planning, teamwork, communication, and ability to follow systems and plans.
• Be able to work flexibly and creatively to support child-centred learning and manage learning environments.

Responsibilities

• Assist with educational support and care of pupil(s) with special educational needs in and out of the classroom.
• Develop understanding of pupil needs and participate in Education Plan/ Care Plan evaluations.
• Promote inclusion of pupils in mainstream schools under direction of teachers.
• Support behavioural management programmes and assist with movement of pupils around school.
• Clarify and explain instruction; ensure pupils can use equipment and materials; motivate and encourage learning.
• Provide continuity of adult care including supervising on/off transport, toileting, and medication administration.
• Assist with administration tasks and maintaining pupil progress records.
