Job summary

Veritas Education Recruitment is seeking a dedicated SEMH Teaching Assistant for a specialist post-16 construction setting in Chorley. You will support learners aged 16+ to develop skills, confidence and independence for adulthood and employment.

The role involves working with learners with SEMH and additional needs in a practical construction and classroom setting, aiming to build workplace-ready behaviours and positive attitudes towards learning.

Qualifications

• Experience supporting young people aged 16+ is desirable.
• Experience with SEMH, challenging behaviour or additional needs is desirable.
• Calm, patient and emotionally resilient approach.
• Strong communication and relationship-building skills.
• Willingness to connect with learners and maintain clear boundaries.
• Experience in education, youth work, care, mentoring, sports coaching or related roles is advantageous.
• Level 2/3 Teaching Assistant or similar qualification is desirable but not essential.
• Enhanced DBS on the Update Service, or willingness to obtain one.

Responsibilities

• Provide one-to-one and small-group support to learners aged 16+.
• Support learners with SEMH needs to engage with education and vocational training.
• Build trusting, professional relationships while maintaining appropriate boundaries.
• Encourage positive behaviour, emotional regulation and effective communication.
• Support learners during both classroom-based learning and practical construction activities.
• Help learners develop confidence, independence and workplace-ready behaviours.
• Encourage attendance, engagement and participation in learning.
• Work alongside teaching staff and pastoral teams as needed.
• Assist learners to achieve individual targets and personal development goals.
