Job summary

Veritas Education Recruitment is seeking a passionate Construction Teacher for a specialist secondary SEMH school in Burnley, delivering practical construction lessons to 11-19-year-olds and post-16 students.

You will teach carpentry, joinery, brickwork, painting, and other trades, adapting to individual EHCP targets while promoting safety and employability skills.

Qualifications

  • QTS/QTLS or recognised teaching qualification.
  • Background in construction trades or practical vocational education.
  • Experience delivering construction or vocational subjects.
  • Experience working with secondary or SEMH/SEN settings.

Responsibilities

  • Plan and deliver engaging, practical construction lessons to secondary-aged learners and post-16 students.
  • Teach a range of construction and building skills (carpentry, joinery, brickwork, painting and decorating, maintenance).
  • Develop learners' practical abilities, confidence, independence, and employability.
  • Differentiate lessons to meet a wide range of learning needs and EHCP targets.
  • Deliver a structured vocational curriculum that promotes positive learning experiences.
  • Maintain high health and safety standards and safe use of tools and materials.
  • Support pupils in teamwork, communication, problem solving, and workplace behaviours.
  • Build positive relationships with learners using a calm, nurturing approach.
  • Implement effective behaviour management in a specialist SEMH setting.
  • Assess, monitor, and record learners' progress and achievements.
  • Collaborate with Teaching Assistants, SENCO, pastoral staff, and school team.
  • Contribute to learners' personal development and life skills.

Construction Teacher - Secondary SEMH School

Location: Burnley, Lancashire

Contract Type: Full-Time, Term-Time Only

Start Date: ASAP

Role Overview

We are seeking a passionate, practical, and dedicated Construction Teacher to join a specialist secondary SEMH school in Burnley, supporting young people aged 11-19.This is an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic construction professional or experienced teacher to deliver engaging, hands‑on lessons that develop learners' practical skills, confidence, independence, and employability. You will play a key role in delivering a vocational construction curriculum tailored to the individual needs, abilities, and interests of pupils with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs.The successful candidate will be committed to creating a safe, structured, and positive learning environment where every young person can develop their skills and achieve their potential.

Key Responsibilities
  • Plan and deliver engaging, practical construction lessons to secondary-aged learners and post-16 students.
  • Teach a range of construction and building skills, which may include carpentry, joinery, brickwork, painting and decorating, maintenance, and other relevant trades.
  • Develop learners' practical abilities, confidence, independence, and preparation for future employment or further education.
  • Adapt and differentiate lessons to meet a wide range of learning needs, abilities, and individual EHCP targets.
  • Deliver a structured, engaging, and accessible vocational curriculum that promotes positive learning experiences.
  • Establish and maintain high standards of health and safety, including the safe use of tools, equipment, and materials.
  • Support pupils in developing teamwork, communication, problem-solving, and workplace behaviours.
  • Build positive, trusting relationships with learners, using a calm, consistent, and nurturing approach.
  • Implement effective behaviour management strategies appropriate to a specialist SEMH setting.
  • Assess, monitor, and record learners' progress, skills development, and achievements.
  • Work collaboratively with Teaching Assistants, the SENCO, pastoral staff, and the wider school team.
  • Contribute to learners' personal development, life skills, and preparation for adulthood.
Requirements
  • Qualified Teacher Status (QTS/QTLS) or a recognised teaching qualification, where required.
  • Relevant construction trade qualifications, industry experience, or a strong background in practical vocational education.
  • Experience delivering construction, practical skills, design technology, or vocational subjects.
  • Experience working with children or young people, ideally within a secondary school, alternative provision, SEN, or SEMH setting.
  • Understanding of the needs of pupils with SEMH, ASD, ADHD, and other additional learning needs.
  • Ability to plan and deliver practical, differentiated lessons that engage learners with a range of abilities.
  • Strong knowledge of construction health and safety, risk assessments, and safe working practices.
  • A patient, resilient, and nurturing approach to supporting young people with challenging behaviours.
  • Excellent communication, teamwork, and classroom management skills.
  • Enhanced DBS on the Update Service, or willingness to obtain one.
