Job description
Second Officer for Marella Cruises

Department: Deck

Description

We are looking for an experienced 2nd Officer (Safety). Joining date: 15/Feb/2026 on board cruise vessel MARELLA EXPLORER – Contract 3 months On / 2 months Off.

Reporting line: Staff Captain.

Direct reports: 3rd Officer (Safety), 3rd Officer (Navigation).

Department: Deck.

Qualifications: as per C601D (Marella Cruises) Training & Certification Matrix – Management Level CoC – STCW Reg.II/2.

Key Responsibilities
2nd Officer (Safety)
  • Being the Bridge Watch Keeper as required by the Bridge Operations Manual and Bridge Resource Management (BRM).
  • Carrying out lifting appliances and wires inspections and maintenance.
  • Carrying out safety equipment maintenance and inspections as required by the PMS.
  • Monthly LSA checks according to PMS instruction, reporting any defects within the unplanned maintenance section of the PMS and bringing to the attention of the Ship’s Statutory Safety Officer.
  • Preparing weekly summary of checks and planned work for Safety Officer.
  • Preparing monthly summary of all checklists for Safety Officer.
  • Supporting Safety Officer during passenger and crew drills.
  • Supporting in Lifeboat training and lowering.
  • Inventory and PMS maintenance related to safety.
  • Conducting safety trainings when Safety Officer is indisposed.
  • Maintaining and inspecting LSA deck equipment.
  • Maintaining the working area clean, safe, and handling tools and equipment with care.
  • Participating in emergency drills and responding to actual emergencies as per the Muster List.
  • Adhering to all safety regulations and using appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) during work activities.
  • Adhering to and complying with all company policies and procedures, manuals and directives.
  • Performing duties and tasks according to above but not limited to that.
2nd Officer (Navigation)
  • Being the Bridge Watch Keeper as required by the Bridge Operations Manual and Bridge Resource Management (BRM).
  • Responsible for the standards of Bridge Procedures and watch keeping, reporting any deficiencies to the Staff Captain and to the Master.
  • Preparing and delivering the Itinerary / Voyage Briefing.
  • Coordinating all Charts, Nav Warnings, Notices to Mariners, T & P’s, Publications, Sailing Directions and ECDIS.
  • Keeping the Master informed of the navigational progress of the voyage, weather forecast and they keep the Master apprised of all other matters relevant to the navigation of the ship.
  • Being operationally reliable for all instruments used for Navigation, working in close cooperation with the Chief Electrician and ETO and report any defects directly to the Master without fail.
  • Understudying the Safety Officer in their role as Statutory Safety Officer.
  • Coordinating and maintaining the Deck Log Book and Official Log Book.
  • Maintaining the working area clean, safe, and handling tools and equipment with care.
  • Participating in emergency drills and responding to actual emergencies as per the Muster List.
  • Adhering to all safety regulations and using appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) during work activities.
  • Adhering to and complying with all company policies and procedures, manuals and directives.
  • Performing duties and tasks according to above but not limited to that.
Responsibilities
  • Attend passenger social events as directed by the Head of Department.
  • Partake in inspections, trainings and meetings as directed by the Head of Department.
  • Ensure any direct reports are line managed effectively in accordance with Marella and V.Ships Leisure appraisal policies.
  • Ensure accessibility to direct reports and support individual’s needs, sourcing advice and reporting matters of a personal nature confidentially to the Head of Department where necessary.
  • Other shipboard tasks pertaining to departmental operations as directed by Head of Department.
  • Attending trainings and office visits arranged by V.Ships Leisure where possible.
