Job description
Overview

The Resuscitation Practitioner (RO) will assist the lead Resuscitation Practitioner with the development, management and continuous evaluation of the resuscitation services provided by Moorfields NHS Eye Hospital. They will assist with local planning and implementation of national policies and guidance from the UK Resuscitation Council, NICE, CQC, Department of Health, and Health Education England (Skills for Health). The resuscitation service is a small team that welcomes creative and innovative staff to help in taking resuscitation training to all staff working at the trust.

Responsibilities
  • Be responsible for the organisation, setup and maintenance of resuscitation equipment used in the delivery of training. Ensure the service meets departmental, trust and national standards, policies and procedures.
  • Teach resuscitation courses and immediate resuscitation skills to agreed national and local guidelines, including NEWS and prevention of cardiac arrest in adult and paediatric populations.
  • Run in situ based simulated training exercises across the trust in non-clinical and clinical areas.
  • Support the volunteer services with training requirements.
  • Participate in audits such as compliance with daily checking and stocking of cardiac arrest trolleys, correct use of NEWS and 2222 calls.
  • There is some travel to other sites to provide training.
Education & Training
  • Teach basic and immediate resuscitation skills to agreed national and local guidelines, including NEWS and prevention of cardiac arrest in adult and paediatric populations.
  • Assess the competence of staff performing resuscitation procedures and arrange retraining where appropriate.
  • Devise, plan, implement and evaluate training programmes for all grades of staff appropriate to their role at Moorfields Eye Hospital.
  • Run in situ based simulated training exercises across the trust in non-clinical and clinical areas.
  • Support the volunteer services with training requirements.
  • Be easily accessible and contactable by staff and, when necessary, act as a resource.
  • Maintain records of staff who have received resuscitation training in conjunction with Learning & Development.
  • Actively participate in peer review of teaching skills as part of ongoing professional development.
  • Maintain own professional development.
Quality & Risk
  • Ensure Trust policy incorporates national guidance and contribute to the review and updating of the policy when necessary.
  • Identify clinical risks related to emergency situations and take action as required.
  • Lead on a programme of audits for the resuscitation service and ensure risks are identified and placed on the Trust’s risk register.
  • Ensure emergency equipment is maintained and checked according to Trust policy.
  • Ensure necessary equipment stores are available to facilitate running of nationally accredited courses.
  • Ensure practice is evidence-based and developed in accordance with new guidance.
  • Monitor clinical incidents pertaining to resuscitation and, when necessary, take action to minimise recurrence.
  • Take responsibility for ensuring MHRA notices (resuscitation) are actioned in a timely manner.
  • In conjunction with the Head of Risk & Safety, lead on NHSLA standards for resuscitation.
  • When required, lead or collaborate with senior managers in Serious Untoward Incident enquiries.
Leadership
  • Be an active member of the Trust’s resuscitation committee.
  • Co-ordinate the day-to-day running of the resuscitation service within the post-holder’s areas of responsibility.
  • Act as a change agent and motivator in promoting best practice within the resuscitation service.
  • Be proactive and imaginative in developing resus-based education.
  • Ensure effective use of resources without compromising patient care.
  • Liaise with the Resuscitation Council (UK).
  • Facilitate continuation of the Trust as a licensed Resuscitation Council (UK) training centre.
Travel & Sites

All members of the resuscitation team may be required to travel to other Moorfields sites to provide training and complete audits. This includes Northwick Park Hospital, Ealing Hospital, Croydon, Purley, Stratford, St Ann’s, and Barking.
