Job description

University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (UCLH) is one of the largest and most successful NHS trusts in the UK, serving a large and diverse population. We have a reputation as a centre of clinical excellence, providing academically‑led acute and specialist services, to people from the local area, from throughout the United Kingdom and overseas. Our vision is to deliver top‑quality patient care, excellent education and world‑class research. We strive to create a healthy working environment, where teamwork is valued and staff are encouraged to give and receive feedback, and to listen to and respect each other.

We are looking for a highly experienced, enthusiastic Radiotherapy Engineer to join a team of engineers, physicists and dosimetrists in the provision of Radiotherapy Physics services. The ability to work effectively and professionally in technically demanding situations, in a patient environment, with the minimum of supervision is essential.

Responsibilities
  • Provide a high level of engineering technical support, typically beyond first‑line maintenance, to a busy Radiotherapy department.
  • Carry out all Planned Maintenance activities.
  • Work closely with the physics team to perform Quality Assurance checks of the Linear Accelerators.
  • Undertake research and development projects.
  • This role does not encompass Proton Beam Therapy.
Qualifications
  • Multi‑skilled background in electronic / electrical engineering, with experience exercising judgement to determine and resolve causes of faults in high‑capital, highly complex patient‑critical medical devices and systems, applying suitable fault‑finding techniques to diagnose problems beyond the scope of normal first‑line maintenance.
  • Experience in servicing and repairing Linear Accelerators, kV and MV Imaging systems and patient support couches is essential.
  • Experience of Varian TrueBeam Linear Accelerators and Varian Halcyon Linear Accelerators is desirable.
  • Familiarity in performing Quality Assurance checks on Linear Accelerators is also desirable.
  • A degree or HNC/D in electronics / electrical engineering or an equivalent technical qualification in engineering is essential.

The integrated Radiotherapy Physics section is part of a multi‑disciplinary team in the Department of Clinical Oncology. The Radiotherapy Department is currently equipped with five Varian TrueBeam Linear Accelerators. The department equipment also includes one orthovoltage unit and an Elekta High Dose Rate Flexitron brachytherapy unit. Planning equipment includes a CT simulator with full 4D imaging capabilities.
