Job summary

A regional healthcare provider in Liverpool is seeking a Pre-Registration Trainee Pharmacy Technician for a two-year training program. Successful candidates will earn a BTEC Level 3 Diploma in Pharmacy. Applicants must have four GCSEs at grade C or above including English, Maths, and a Science. Starting pay is 70% of Band 4, increasing to 75% in the second year. This position requires participation in on-the-job training and completion of academic assignments to qualify as a registered pharmacy technician. Applications close on 29 December 2025.

Pre-Registration Trainee Pharmacy Technician - Annex 21

Liverpool University Hospitals is offering a two-year training opportunity to earn a BTEC Level 3 Diploma in the Principles and Practice for Pharmacy Technicians. To be eligible, applicants MUST have at least four GCSEs at grade C (or above) in English Language, Maths, Science (core subject like Biology, Chemistry, Physics, or Combined Science), and another GCSE. Functional Skills English and Maths Level 2 are accepted. If you lack a core Science, an NVQ Level 2 in Pharmacy and two years of experience as a pharmacy assistant will be considered as equivalent.

Applicants must be available to start on 16/02/2026, with college enrolment before 23/02/2025. This is a Band 4 annex 21 training post, with pay starting at 70% of the Band 4 pay scale in the first year and increasing to 75% in the second year. Pay protection will be considered for current NHS employees.

This post is an apprenticeship and course fees are funded via the Apprenticeship Levy i.e. public funds. Eligibility will be assessed at interview and prior to any offer. If you are not eligible for apprenticeship funding, your application may be withdrawn.

Applicants are applying for a position in one of our larger hospital sites (Aintree or Royal Liverpool) and your preferred location may not be guaranteed.

Main duties of the job

Liverpool University hospitals will provide the support you need to obtain your professional qualification in which once completed you will be enabled to register as a Pharmacy Technician with the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC)

Students must attend an online tutorial from Bradford College one day a week whilst the remainder of the working week will be on the job experience. Students must satisfy all requirements as instructed by academic staff including all assignments, assessments and examinations to qualify as a registered pharmacy technician.

Job responsibilities

To participate in the preparation and assembly of all pharmaceuticals including extemporaneously prepared products according to the prevailing policies and procedures.

To participate fully in training through rotations within the department and carry out all duties required within each section to complete BTEC Level 3 Diploma in the Principles and Practice for Pharmacy Technicians.
