Job description
Overview

Power Systems Consultant

Siemens PTI Consulting, part of the Siemens Smart Infrastructure business unit, is a globally trusted advisor in the energy sector. We solve sophisticated challenges by delivering strategic business advisory and technical consulting, powered by industry-leading grid simulation software. Our customers rely on us to support the planning, operation and optimisation of generation connections, transmission and distribution networks, and industrial power systems. We help shape resilient, efficient, and future-ready energy systems.

Location: We are led by our forward-thinking hybrid working policy, which requires 2-3 days a week in the office (Manchester) or visiting customer sites across the UK, Ireland and Europe.

Responsibilities
  • Develop and maintain customer relationships and position PTI Consulting to secure future business.
  • Prepare clear, comprehensive and compelling consulting proposals and tenders with robust project plans to ensure successful delivery, supported by accurate resource and effort estimates.
  • Provide technical and project leadership to support successful delivery of consulting engagements, offering credible insights and practical solutions to sophisticated software and data challenges.
  • Lead and deliver consulting engagements related to power system modelling and analysis, including system dynamics and transients, system interconnection and grid code compliance.
  • Work with customers to assess their business requirements and application objectives, and propose tailored solutions that address their challenges, especially the use of standard power systems analysis software and bespoke customisations.
  • Expertly use power systems software (e.g. PSSE, PSCAD, DIgSILENT PowerFactory) to deliver high-quality modelling and analysis aligned with customer objectives.
  • Develop innovative and robust software solutions primarily using Python, with possible use of FORTRAN, including custom dynamic models, automation scripts for power systems studies and post-processing of results, and complex decision support tools for operational planning.
  • Develop mathematical models to assess performance, stability and resilience of electrical networks and power system equipment.
  • Automate and script processes using power system analysis tools (including PSSE and PSSSINCAL) to streamline repetitive tasks, reduce errors and enhance analysis efficiency.
  • Deliver on-site technical consulting and training services, and provide Grid Simulation software technical support to customers.
  • Ensure the technical quality of power systems project delivery by reviewing consultancy outputs for accuracy, clarity, and alignment with best practices and client expectations.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement of team processes and standards, while actively sharing knowledge and learning from colleagues.
  • Manage and support project execution by supervising progress and agreeing timely adjustments to maintain scope, schedule, budget and quality.
What does it take to be successful in this role?
  • Confirmed experience in power systems consulting, with a validated ability to develop opportunities and deliver high-impact solutions. Proven analytical skills and the ability to think creatively to take on problems.
  • University degree (BSc, MSc or PhD) in Electrical or Power Systems Engineering, with relevant professional experience in power system analysis across steady-state, dynamic and transient domains.
  • Proficiency in using power system simulation programs (PSSE, PSSSINCAL, PSSCAPE, DIgSILENT PowerFactory, PSCAD, MATLAB/Simulink) and programming tools such as Python and FORTRAN.
  • Expertise and experience in transmission system planning, operating studies and power system performance analyses, including power quality, transient stability and voltage control.
  • Experience working with transmission, distribution and independent system operators/owners, utilities and energy developers.
  • In-depth understanding of the UK and Ireland regulatory frameworks, including Grid Codes and system operation.
  • Expertise and experience in high voltage applications, industrial power supply concepts, power electronics, HVDC, FACTS, and renewable generation.
  • Strong technical leadership skills, with a proven track record to lead cross-functional teams in solving sophisticated problems.
Nice to have (not essential)
  • Awareness of CIM/CGMES standards and experience integrating offline simulation tools with real-time power system operation platforms.
  • Expertise and experience in generator and inverter-based control systems and associated power system equipment models.
