Job Summary

The Phlebotomy Department based at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital (NNUH) is part of the Eastern Pathology Alliance (EPA), a managed Pathology network involving NNUH, the James Paget University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Kings Lynn. The Phlebotomy department is responsible for the provision of a phlebotomy service at NNUH only. This covers provision of daily ward based phlebotomy on a 7 day per week basis as well as outpatient phlebotomy on the NNUH site. Supporting the delivery of a high quality, safe and compassionate healthcare service, all staff are expected to act as a role model to others in all aspects of their work and consistently demonstrate NNUH's 'PRIDE' values of People focused, Respect, Dedication, Integrity and Excellence.

Main duties

This is a full time substantive opportunity for the successful candidate to work in a busy hospital department in a leadership role. We are specifically looking to appoint a candidate from a nursing background who will be able to apply your clinical skills to support the phlebotomy service and build your leadership skills in managing a busy service. The post holder will act as technical and operational lead for Phlebotomy at NNUH, to be the primary point of contact for technical and clinical advice and expertise for Phlebotomy. The primary purpose of the role is to ensure the provision of a high quality phlebotomy service organising the service and liaising with multiple users of the service across the Trust. The phlebotomy manager is line manager for a team of approximately 40 people as well as responsible to coordinating a sub team of approximately 10 bank staff.

Job Responsibilities

The following skills and experience will be required and are essential for the successful candidates:

  • To communicate departmental and Trust initiatives and issues to staff via regular staff meetings, one to one discussions and written communication (electronic or printed)
  • To represent Phlebotomy at Trust and regional level by attending meetings and collaborating in service improvement projects. This will involve proposing and developing service improvement projects and business cases and presenting to senior EPA and NNUH divisional management and where necessary other NHS providers and external agencies.
  • Provide a high level of tact diplomacy and persuasive skills when dealing with enquiries from within the Trust and when working with other NHS providers and external agencies.
  • To work with Senior EPA management, Trust management and other stakeholders to develop plans and implement projects as they relate to phlebotomy services.
  • Process and communicate complex data to facilitate the dissemination and collection of information within the department and develop effective communication processes.
  • To define data collection strategies in using a variety of methods and sources to measure and assess service demands. And use to analyse, identify areas where improvements can be made and respond to and develop strategies for changing service demands and improvements
Person Specification

Essential Qualifications

  • Level 5 Qualification in management or equivalent experience in a management role
  • Trained and competent to perform Venepuncture, with detailed knowledge of venepuncture techniques and other clinical skills

Essential Experience

  • Experience in recruitment and interviewing
  • Experience of procurement.
  • Experience of setting and planning rosters and organising staff.
