Position Overview

The Division of Behavioral Health and Recovery is seeking a Painter for the Chester Mental Health Center located in Chester, Illinois. The Painter will receive day‑to‑day guidance from the Chief Stationery Engineer and perform journey‑level work in painting, redecorating, and refinishing of walls, interior and exterior woodwork, furniture, fixtures, metal surfaces, and equipment.

Responsibilities
  • Perform journey‑level painting, redecorating, and refinishing of interior and exterior walls, woodwork, furniture, and fixtures.
  • Prepare walls, metal surfaces, floors, ceilings, and equipment for painting, and fill holes in plaster or woodwork with patching plaster, putty, or other filler compounds.
  • Set up ladders or scaffolding necessary for painting and repairing interior and exterior walls.
  • Create shop work at facilities.
  • Inspect work sites to determine the amount and type of materials needed for painting projects.
  • Support additional duties within scope of responsibilities.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Complete high school or equivalent (4 years).
  • Successful completion of a recognized painter apprenticeship program and 2 years of full‑time journey‑level painter experience, or 6 years of full‑time journey‑level painter experience.
Conditions of Employment
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Ability to work overhead, on knees, and on lifts/overhead platforms.
  • Ability to work from heights, stand for long periods, and move heavy equipment up to 50 lb independently, or up to 75–100 lb with assistance.
  • Ability to use office equipment including personal computers.
  • Ability to travel as required.
  • Pass IDHS background check and drug screen.
