Mechanical Project Engineer – Environment

Location: Cambridge (regional travel required)

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Mechanical Project Engineer to join our Environment team in the Cambridge region, working on high value clean and wastewater projects on our South Staffs Water Framework.

Ideally you will be based in the Cambridge area and be willing to travel for work across the region.

Purpose of the Role

You will play a key role in the successful delivery of mechanical projects within the water industry, supporting schemes of varying size and complexity. You’ll lead engineering delivery from design through to completion, ensuring projects are completed safely, efficiently, and to the highest technical standards.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead the mechanical engineering aspects of water and wastewater projects from concept to completion.
  • Deliver a range of M&E schemes including pumping stations, dosing systems, chlorination plants and associated civil structures.
  • Carry out early site investigations and liaise with clients, designers, and project teams to define and develop project requirements.
  • Prepare and review health and safety documentation including risk assessments, method statements and project management plans.
  • Manage procurement of materials and support subcontractor engagement.
  • Attend factory and site testing, commissioning activities and client training sessions.
  • Participate in design reviews and hazard studies to develop safe, innovative solutions.
  • Support cost control, budgeting and commercial management activities.
  • Develop and review inspection and test plans (ITPs), ensuring quality assurance throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Contribute to the preparation and close-out of project documentation, including “as built” drawings, commissioning manuals, and O&M manuals.
  • Promote a proactive approach to Health & Safety and environmental compliance across all project stages.
About You

You will be an experienced and motivated Mechanical Project Engineer with a background in the water industry, able to manage technical requirements and drive high-quality delivery across multiple projects.

Essential
  • An industry-applicable Mechanical ONC/HNC/B.Eng or NVQ equivalent.
  • Proven experience in the water industry or similar regulated environment.
  • Knowledge of mechanical systems such as pumping stations, dosing systems and process plant.
  • Strong commercial and contractual awareness.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (including Project).
  • Excellent communication, organisational and leadership skills.
  • Ability to collaborate across teams and maintain relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Passionate about delivering quality, safety and innovation.
Desirable
  • Experience in chemical dosing systems.
  • Experience leading or supporting multi-disciplinary project delivery teams.
  • Knowledge of CDM regulations and industry standards.
