Job summary

A major engineering company is seeking a Mechanical or Materials Engineer to join its Transverse Engineering team in Bridgwater, Somerset. The successful candidate will be responsible for supporting nuclear safety assessments and managing technical queries from the site contractors. You will leverage your experience in mechanical design, safety regulations, and stakeholder communication while working independently and collaboratively with various teams. This role is particularly suited for qualified engineers with a strong background in the nuclear industry.

Qualifications

  • 4+ years of experience in system design and construction.

Job description
Job Purpose / Overview

The role will operationally report to the Transverse Discipline Lead within the Integrated Transverse Team, and functionally report to an Engineering Lead within the MEH and Civils Operational Branch of JDO, Bridgwater.

Start: ASAP

Location: Bridgwater, Somerset

Pay: Day rate depending on experience - PAYE or Umbrella. Will be discussed in more detail.

The Transverse Engineering team is formed of client, UK engineers and Responsible Designer engineers from EPR Engineering. The post-holder will be a Mechanical or Materials Engineer, contributing to the nuclear safety assessment and technical assessment of engineering queries raised by the site Contractor on the M&E scope across the CI/BOP and Nuclear Island buildings. The role will consist of both client and responsible designer activities.

The role will be focused on the mechanical discipline but will be interfaced with other disciplines and with several parties, such as the site Contractors (composed of main suppliers and sub-suppliers), Construction teams, Quality teams, Project Management teams, or Design teams (embedded within the JDO organisation on site, or in back office).

Principal Accountabilities
  • Responding to General Queries, Non-Conformances, Change Request, and Exemption Requests originating from the MEH Contractor on site, with the support of the Responsible Designer or site Experts when needed.
  • Provide adequate oversight to ensure the Nuclear Safety and Environmental Regulation requirements are met.
  • Support the integrated team with technical assessment of contractor queries.
  • Carry out nuclear safety and environmental assessment (categorisation) of queries.
  • Challenge design decisions so that engineering and design aligns with the project strategy.
  • Assist in co‑ordinating support from other external organisations.
  • Contribute to the resolution and closure of open points.
  • Assess technical risk and subsequently address this risk.
  • Maintain a strong relationship with EPR Engineering (Responsible Designer).
  • Report operationally to an Engineering Lead.
Knowledge, Skills, Qualifications & Experience
  • Degree or equivalent in a relevant engineering discipline.
  • Experience in system design, mechanical design, installation and/or commissioning, construction.
  • Experience applying multi-disciplinary technical knowledge within the nuclear industry.
  • Knowledge of the construction / installation industry.
  • Knowledge of Health & Safety legislation including CDM and Nuclear Site License requirements.
  • Experience / understanding of welding engineering and NDT.
  • Ability to influence a diverse range of stakeholders, particularly those in a site environment.
  • Ability to work independently, be pro‑active, report on and elevate relevant issues.
  • Qualified engineer and experienced over 4 years.
