Locum Urology Consultant (Bladder Cancer)

The Department of Urology at University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is looking to recruit a highly motivated Locum Urology Consultant with a specialist interest in Non-Muscle Invasive Bladder cancer and Lower Urinary Tract Symptoms. The post holder will be part of both the benign urology and uro‑oncology teams with a clinical practice focused on, but not limited to, management of patients with haematuria, lower urinary tract symptoms and non‑muscle invasive bladder cancer. They will also have a role in service innovation and improvement through transurethral laser ablation (TULA) and overseeing the delivery of novel and established intravascular therapies for bladder cancer.

The post holder will have a specialist interest and clinical expertise in the management of urological cancers, specifically non‑muscle invasive bladder cancer but will also have knowledge in the diagnostic work‑up of female lower urinary tract symptoms.

Main duties of the job
  • To ensure that services are responsive to the needs of patients and other service users and their families.
  • Where appropriate, to facilitate working arrangements between the subspecialty teams within the service.
  • To meet regularly with key members of the multidisciplinary team and support effective multidisciplinary team working.
  • To work closely with the DCD and management team to respond to and meet external standards relevant to the Service.
  • To support the college tutor and educational supervisor in junior medical staff issues training and performance.
  • To support the DCD, implement and monitor compliance plans to ensure that all junior medical staff within the Service are compliant with legal requirements.
  • To attend meetings as appropriate with the Divisional Clinical Director and management team.
  • In collaboration with the Clinical Leads and management team, to support the local implementation of the Trust objectives within the Division.

The successful candidate will be joining the largest and most prestigious Urology Department in the UK. We are a specialist centre for excellence for complex urological care, innovation, and research. The department offers comprehensive care for almost the whole spectrum of Urology split into 6 sub‑groups, with the teams working together closely alongside other services such as gynaecology, women's health, assisted conception unit, oncology and uro‑radiology. The subspecialty teams within the Urology Department are: Reconstructive Urology Functional, Reconstructive and Adolescent Urology & Neuro‑urology Stones (including Lithotripsy) General Urology Andrology Uro‑oncology.

Person Specification
Knowledge and Qualifications
  • Eligible for full UK GMC Registration and possess FRCS (Urol) or equivalent.
  • On GMC Specialist Register in relevant specialty, or at the time of interview within 6 months of expected date of CCT. NB: Non UK trained doctors must be on the GMC register and Specialist Register in relevant specialty by date of appointment.
  • Clinical knowledge commensurate with post CCT/ fellowship training.
  • The ability to undertake and manage clinical audits including supervision of junior staff.
  • Use of databases and hospital systems (PAS/ EPR/ CDR/ PACS) to a competent level.
  • Knowledge of Clinical Governance framework of NHS.
  • Understanding of current changes in the management and organisational structures of the NHS.
  • Ability to work within these parameters.
  • Knowledge and understanding of principles of resource and budgetary management.
  • Higher Academic degree.
Experience
  • Excellent clinical skills.
  • Capacity to use and develop a wide range of theoretical approaches.
  • Proven ability and commitment to carry out high quality research leading to publication.
  • Involvement in the clinical audit process and an understanding of its aims and objectives.
