Locally Employed Doctor in General Surgery - Heartlands Hospital

The closing date is 19 September 2025

A Locally Employed Doctor (Higher) position is offered for a fixed term period. The post is suitable for a surgeon looking to broaden their understanding in General Surgery, complex benign Upper gastrointestinal surgery and metabolic/bariatric surgery. The post is versatile and can be tailored to individual learning requirements.

Main duties of the job

This post will be primarily based at Heartlands and Solihull Trust sites. This is a unit performing the full range of benign upper gastrointestinal surgery. The unit performs approximately 200 metabolic/bariatric surgery cases per year (including sleeve gastrectomy, roux en-y gastric bypass and one anastomosis gastric bypass). The unit performs a large number of complex hiatal and anti-reflux procedures. For trainees looking to gain more broad experience there are a large number of dedicated cholecystectomy lists which help to accelerate trainee development. There are opportunities to attend clinic and endoscopy sessions. The trust has also recently implemented a weekly robotic surgery list for benign upper gastrointestinal procedures.

Job responsibilities

ON-CALL ACTIVITY AND EMERGENCY SURGERY

Emergency surgery is located on the Heartlands hospital site although appointees may also provide out of hours cover for Solihull hospital. This is a busy emergency surgery department dealing with a high-volume of theatre cases which provides good opportunities for training.

There are Consultants available on call for both Upper Gastrointestinal and Colorectal surgery 24/7. At registrar level there are on-call responsibilities for both emergency admissions and CEPOD theatres with these roles being supported by two individual registrars during daytime hours. Overnight there is a second registrar available on site to support the primary night registrar until approximately 0200. Ward cover is provided by individual base teams.

In general JSDs will be aligned to the same Consultants during on-call activities which helps to accelerate development.
