Responsibilities
  • Develop and maintain software applications under supervision through paired programming.
  • Participate in code reviews and testing processes.
  • Contribute to project planning and delivery activities.
  • Support system documentation and user guidance materials.
  • Help identify and resolve live service issues following agreed procedures.
  • Learn how to apply modern development standards in everything you do.
Application Requirements

A 500‑word Personal Statement is required. Your personal statement should clearly demonstrate how your skills and experience meet the requirements of the role and align with the person specification.

Qualifications
  • Completed a Level 3 Software Development Apprenticeship with QA or have an equivalent qualification with another training provider.
  • OR an A‑level in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) subject and a successful completion of our aptitude test.
  • OR a BTEC Diploma in IT and a successful completion of our aptitude test.
  • OR 2 years’ experience in a relevant role and successful completion of our aptitude test, and are 16 or over.
  • Have the right to live and work in the UK, with valid ID (passport or birth certificate) and a National Insurance number.
  • Have lived in the UK or EEA for at least 3 years prior to starting.
  • Be out of full‑time education (or finishing this academic year).
  • Not be enrolled in another apprenticeship or receiving DfE funding for another course.
  • Be able to work at least 30 hours per week (or follow an extended apprenticeship if part‑time).
Benefits

Salary of £31,096 with HMRC contributing £9,008 towards the Civil Service Defined Benefit Pension scheme. Flexible and hybrid working policies allow you to balance work and personal commitments. Generous leave allowance starts at 25 days and increases by one day for each year of qualifying service up to a maximum of 30 days. Pension contributions at 28.97% of salary. Family‑friendly policies, personal support, coaching and development.

Working Conditions

HMRC is an office‑based organisation, and colleagues are expected to spend 60% of their working time in the office. Where the role allows it, colleagues can work from home for up to 2 days a week, averaged over a calendar month.
