Background and Context
The School of Environmental and Life Sciences opened 1 August 2025 and consists of 40 academic staff across Geography & Environment, Marine Science and Biological Sciences. It delivers 8 undergraduate courses, 3 taught masters and numerous postgraduate research programmes. The Marine Biology team includes 8 staff and our research themes focus on oceanography, polar ecology, fisheries science, marine benthic ecology, intertidal ecology, conservation and habitat restoration, marine policy and social science, GIS and spatial data, microplastics, blue carbon and offshore wind.
Specific Duties and Responsibilities
- Support marine science teaching through delivery of lectures and practical classes at undergraduate and postgraduate level.
- Be Programme Director for the MSc Marine Conservation.
- Support student projects, particularly at MSc level.
- Coordinate and lead field trips across various modules associated with our marine undergraduate and MSc programmes.
- Conduct research in an area of marine conservation relevant to one or more of the School research themes. Secure funding to support this research.

Teaching
- Teach in a variety of settings from small group tutorials to large lectures at undergraduate to postgraduate level (as appropriate).
- Identify learning needs of students and define appropriate learning objectives.
- Ensure that content, methods of delivery and learning materials will meet the defined learning objectives.
- Develop own teaching materials, methods and approaches with guidance.
- Develop the skills of applying appropriate approaches to teaching.
- Seek ways of improving performance by reflecting on teaching design and delivery and obtaining and analysing feedback.
- Translate knowledge of advances in the subject area into the course of study.
- Select appropriate assessment instruments and criteria, assess the work and progress of students by reference to the criteria and provide constructive feedback to students.
- Supervise the work of students, provide advice on study skills and help them with learning problems.
Research
- Identify and conduct own or joint areas of research and/or contribute to the successful delivery of existing funded projects.
- Develop research proposals and funding applications (or other income capture activities) to support own or joint research projects.
- Develop and submit peer‑reviewed publications, either as sole or co‑author (as appropriate to the project or research area).
- Work with colleagues to develop and deliver knowledge exchange, policy translation or other impact activities.
- Supervise postgraduate researchers in Environmental Science and closely related disciplines.
- Continually update knowledge and understanding in field or specialism and engage in continuous personal development.
Relationships and Teamworking
- Liaise with colleagues and students.
- Build internal contacts and participate in internal networks for exchange of information and to form relationships for future collaboration, for example faculty committees.
- Join external networks to share information and identify potential sources of funds.
- Collaborate with academic colleagues on course development, curriculum changes and the development of research activity.
- Attend and contribute to subject group meetings.
- Act as Module Leader and Programme Director.
- Contribute to collaborative decision‑making with colleagues on academic content, and on the assessment of students' work.
- Share responsibility in deciding how to deliver modules and assess students.

Essential – Education and Training
- A PhD in marine biology or a relevant related discipline.
- Expected to become a FHEA within 2 years unless already achieved.
Desirable – Education and Training
Essential – Work Experience
- Experience in teaching effectively at undergraduate and masters level.
- Experience in module leadership.
- Ability to supervise undergraduate and masters dissertations in relevant areas of marine science.
- An emerging track record in the research field of marine conservation, appropriate to career stage.
- Ability to lead the MSc Marine Conservation as Programme Director.
Desirable – Work Experience
- Ability to supervise doctoral student projects.
- Ability to contribute to residential field courses.
- Willingness to contribute to recruitment activities e.g. open days/Clearing call centre.
- Evidence of successful grant capture.
Essential – Skills and Knowledge
- An ability to communicate complex conceptual ideas to widely divergent audiences.
- Expertise in marine conservation.
Desirable – Skills and Knowledge
- Ability to contribute to existing research group activities.
