Job summary

SSEN Transmission is seeking a Principal Engineer to lead HVDC systems across multiple projects, directing technical governance and supplier strategy. This senior role shapes standards, risk management, and long-term decisions in HVDC technology.

We welcome applicants who may not meet every requirement and would consider Senior Engineer applicants. The role offers flexible first in Scotland with base location at an SSEN office or depot, and a competitive package.

Qualifications

• Degree in Electrical Engineering or related field; Chartered Engineer status or working towards chartered status.
• Demonstrable expert-level experience in design, specification, construction, control & operation, and maintenance of HVDC systems.
• Knowledge of UK/European standards and grid codes; ability to write technical specs and guidance.

Responsibilities

• Write, review, maintain and own technical specifications and guidance for HVDC equipment used on the Transmission network.
• Provide technical guidance to the transmission business for HVDC development, refurbishment or fault investigations.
• Lead supplier engagement and innovation projects evaluating new HVDC technologies.
• Review test plans and witness tests as HVDC Technical Authority to ensure adequate testing and supplier suitability.
• Provide SME input to design reviews and verify proposals for fit-for-purpose scope.
