Job summary
SSEN Transmission in Scotland is seeking a Principal Engineer to provide technical leadership across HVDC projects, setting direction for converters, control and protection equipment, and governance. The role influences supplier strategy, drives innovation and builds capability across the engineering community.
We welcome candidates who may not meet every requirement and would consider a Senior Engineer. Base location is flexible Scotland with a base at SSEN offices or depots in key cities
Qualifications
- Degree in Electrical Engineering and Chartered Engineer status or working towards chartered status.
- Expert level experience in design, specification, construction, control & operation, and maintenance of HVDC systems.
- Ability to assess issues, compare technical solutions, and understand HVDC interfaces with AC networks.
- Familiarity with National Grid, British and European Standards, UK grid code and SQSS.
Responsibilities
- Write, review, and own HVDC specifications and guidance for converters, valves, and protection equipment.
- Provide technical guidance for HVDC network development, refurbishment, or fault investigations.
- Lead supplier engagement and innovation projects for HVDC technologies.
- As HVDC Technical Authority, review test plans and witness tests for HVDC equipment.
- Provide SME input to Design Authority reviews and verify project proposals.
