Job summary

SSEN Transmission seeks a Principal Engineer to provide technical leadership across HVDC projects, setting direction for converters, protection equipment, and governance. The role shapes supplier strategy, drives innovation, and builds capability within the engineering community.

Qualifications

• Degree in Electrical Engineering or a related discipline and Chartered Engineer status.
• Demonstrable expert-level experience in design, specification, construction, control & operation, and maintenance of HVDC systems.
• Ability to assess issues, compare solutions, and understand development, design, planning, and integration requirements for HVDC systems.
• Strong understanding of interfaces between AC network design and HVDC integration.
• Broad knowledge of National Grid, British and European standards, UK grid code and SQSS; capable of writing specifications and guidance notes for HVDC aspects.

Responsibilities

• Write, review, maintain, and own technical specifications and guidance for HVDC converters and control & protection equipment.
• Provide technical guidance to the transmission business for HVDC development, refurbishment, or fault investigations.
• Lead supplier engagement and innovation projects evaluating new HVDC technologies.
• Review test plans and witness tests as part of the HVDC Technical Authority to ensure robust testing and supplier suitability.
• Provide SME input to design reviews and verify proposals for fit-for-purpose scope and changes.
