National Highways is looking for a Lawyer with experience in all aspects of property law, highways law, and operational matters. The role will play a pivotal part in supporting the delivery of National Highways’ objectives and tackling diverse legal challenges across some of England’s largest infrastructure projects.
Responsibilities and Qualifications
- General drafting, negotiating, and advising on documents such as leases, licences, transfer deeds, property contracts, easements, and wayleaves.
- Providing litigation advice on a wide range of issues, including encroachment on our land, adverse possession claims, and landlord‑tenant disputes.
- Providing advice to the business on land ownership, the Electronic Communications Code, powers of statutory undertakers, and statutory powers available to National Highways.
- Providing property support on the delivery of highway schemes under the Highways Act 1980.
- Assisting with general and varied legal queries affecting the business.
- Qualified to practice as a Solicitor or Barrister in England and Wales, or a fellow of the Chartered Institute of Legal Executives.
- Experience of working within a legal services division.
- Strong communication skills with the ability to build relationships with stakeholders and influence across all levels of the business.
- In‑depth understanding of Public Law.
- Excellent experience of property law and highways law.

Legal Services encompasses both the National Highways legal team and the company secretariat. We provide an effective legal service and support the Board, Chief Executive, and its committees on a wide range of issues, including commercial, planning, operational, highways, employment, regulatory, and property matters, ensuring legal compliance and minimising exposure to risk.
