About this role

Are you a well-rounded Designer with a strong understanding of consumer products, market needs, and production constraints, and a desire to see your work come to life?

Umbra Studio is seeking a Junior Product Designer to support internal initiatives and custom projects. This role is centered on developing, refining, and executing thoughtful design solutions, with opportunities to contribute fresh, “wow” ideas for future catalogue development. You’ll play a key role in helping projects move forward by translating briefs, market insights, and client needs into well‑executed outcomes.

What you’ll do
  • Work with designers in developing products across a wide range of materials, including wood, plastic, metal, fabric, and emerging sustainable materials.
  • Contribute to internal product development and catalogue initiatives when opportunities arise.
  • Produce accurate 2D and 3D files and specifications, considering cost, ergonomics, safety, sustainability, and manufacturing constraints.
  • Collaborate closely with Designers, Senior Design Leads, Category Managers, and Marketing.
  • Support design reviews, vendor discussions, and client presentations with clear visuals and documentation.
  • Assist with prototyping, mock‑ups, sample reviews, and refinement work.
  • Help ensure projects move forward smoothly by responding quickly to feedback and changing priorities.

What you’ll bring

1. Work Style & Personality Requirements

Efficient & Adaptable – Able to manage multiple projects with shifting priorities. Works smart, stays organized, and delivers quality work within tight timelines.

Team Player – This role works closely with Designers and Design Leads on a daily basis. Clear communication, listening skills, and collaboration are essential.

2. Technical Strengths Required – MUST

AI‑Assisted Workflow – Interest in or experience using AI tools to improve efficiency, support creative tasks, and assist design processes.

3D CAD Skills – Working knowledge of SolidWorks, with the ability to learn and adapt to Onshape.

2D Graphic Skills – Ability to create or edit graphics to support products, presentations, and documentation.

3. Extra Strengths

  • Ability to contribute original design ideas when appropriate.
  • Model‑making or shop mock‑up experience.
  • Understanding of basic production processes and materials (molding, casting, fabrication, mass production).
  • Comfort working with multiple materials such as plastics, metals, ceramics, and textiles.

4. Portfolio Requirement

The portfolio should demonstrate strong execution skills, including CAD work, graphics, process thinking, and problem‑solving.

The portfolio must also include at least one example showing how the candidate has worked with AI tools.

  • How the tool was applied within the workflow
  • What problem it helped solve or how it improved efficiency, quality, or output

5. Experience

Minimum 1 year of professional or internship experience in Industrial Design or Product Design.

6. Education

Post‑secondary degree or diploma in Industrial Design or a related field.

7. Mindset

Entrepreneurial, proactive, and solution oriented. Comfortable supporting others, taking directions, and contributing to team success in a private, design‑driven company.

8. Organizational & Communication Skills

Strong time management, attention to detail, and the ability to communicate design intent clearly, both visually and verbally.

Compensation

$50,000 - $60,000
