A leading finance recruitment agency is seeking an experienced Interim Financial Controller to join their leadership team on a 4-month contract in York. The successful candidate will have full responsibility for financial reporting, manage a small finance team, and work closely with senior stakeholders. Ideal candidates will be fully qualified accountants with strong technical accounting knowledge and proven leadership skills within a multi-entity environment.

Job description

A diverse and growing business group, with trading entities across a range of sectors, is seeking an experienced Interim Financial Controller to join their leadership team on a 4-month contract. This is a key role providing full responsibility for financial reporting, audit, cashflow management, and driving efficiencies across the group.

The successful candidate will oversee a small finance team and work closely with the Group Managing Director and senior stakeholders to support strategic decision-making and ensure the financial health of the organisation.

Responsibilities
  • Lead preparation of year-end accounts and manage the audit process across multiple entities.
  • Ensure compliance with UK accounting standards and statutory obligations.
  • Review and distribute monthly management accounts within agreed timelines.
  • Oversee quarterly VAT returns and ensure accurate, timely submission.
  • Manage and support a small finance team, fostering collaboration and development.
  • Maintain and update cashflow forecasts, identifying cost-saving initiatives.
  • Enhance financial processes, reporting efficiency, and systems usage (Xero and ERP platforms).
  • Act as a key point of contact for auditors, tax consultants, and banking partners.
  • Provide clear, insightful financial reporting to the Group Managing Director and senior leadership.
Candidate Profile
  • Fully qualified accountant (ACA, ACCA, CIMA) with several years' post-qualification experience.
  • Strong technical accounting knowledge, ideally within a multi-entity environment.
  • Proven ability to lead, organise and prioritise effectively.
  • Excellent communication skills with the confidence to engage stakeholders at all levels.
  • Proficient in financial systems, particularly Xero and ERP platforms.
