INDUSTRIAL OPERATIONS: MANUFACTURING UNDERGRADUATE PROGRAMME

At JLR, our Industrial Operations function is responsible for creating thousands of vehicles every day. The function unites our manufacturing, procurement and supply chain teams and together they think beyond today’s challenges to build the cars of tomorrow.

During the year‑long programme you will work either within the Halewood Plant team or within our Global Manufacturing Engineering (GME) function (also based at Halewood). Your placement will be influenced by your subject specialism and business needs.

HALEWOOD PLANT

Our Halewood Plant is a vehicle production facility with a long heritage of manufacturing. In 2023, we celebrated our 60th year of manufacturing. Halewood is home to the award‑winning Evoque and the Discovery Sport and is now destined to become our first fully electric vehicle manufacturing facility.

This is an exciting time with unprecedented investment and new technologies. We are developing a new generation of electric cars and, if you join this team, you’ll play a key role in delivering our innovative Electrical Modular Architecture (EMA) platform.

  • Paint – The Paint Process Current Manufacturing Engineering (CME) team ensures processes follow engineering guidelines, meet international standards, and maintain quality. They analyze and solve problems, continuously improve processes and use tools like pFMEA to control all conditions in production.

    The paint shop presents unique challenges from pre‑treatment to up to five layers of robot‑applied paint and subsequent inspection. The engineering team handles over 180 parameters, continually working to reduce variability across all areas.

  • Trim and Final – This CME team supports the manufacturing team in producing our vehicles, ensuring highest build quality, compliance with the Bill of Process (BOP) and solving production quality issues.

    The team also supports new model launches such as our electric vehicles. Responsibilities include optimisation of jigs and fixtures, quality analysis, and the use of problem‑solving tools to resolve major issues. Collaboration across engineering departments is essential to achieve business and customer outcomes.

  • Quality
    • Quality Systems – Conduct internal audits, manage non‑conformance and ensure compliance with IATF 16949.
    • Manufacturing Warranty Specialists (MWS) – Act as a link between the plant and dealer network, respond to customer issues, and manage quality audit responses.
    • Government & Regulatory Compliance (GRC) – Ensure vehicles meet all legal and regulatory standards across markets.
    • Finished Vehicle Audit – Verify vehicles meet engineering standards through static, dynamic, and hydropuls tests and assist in problem‑solving across finished vehicle quality.
    • Quality Operations – Verify safety and quality‑critical characteristics during the Standardised Inspection Process and manage defect logging.
  • Material Planning and Logistics (MP&L) – Ensures the right parts are delivered at the right time. Managing the build schedule and overseeing supply chain with thousands of parts from 400 global suppliers, including Automated Guided Vehicles (AGVs). Responsibilities include planning, analysis, project management, and problem‑solving.

WHAT YOU’LL NEED
  • On track to achieve at least a 2.2 degree in manufacturing engineering, mechanical engineering, industrial engineering, material engineering, aeronautical or automotive engineering (or a strong manufacturing interest).
  • Skilled problem‑solver with curiosity for business challenges, numerical and interpersonal skills, and confidence to champion new initiatives.
  • Open only to penultimate‑year students (those returning to final year of study or an integrated master’s after their placement).
  • All our undergraduate programmes have a fixed start date, commencing 6th July 2025.
