Job summary

AECOM is seeking a Cables Design Engineer to join our Transmission & Distribution team in the UK. You will work across the full lifecycle of cable projects, from feasibility through detailed design to commissioning, collaborating with multiple disciplines and clients worldwide.

Ideal candidates will have a background in HV/EHV transmission projects, FEED experience, and familiarity with IEC, CIGRÉ, and NG‑TPs.

Qualifications

Electrical Engineering Degree or HNC in Electrical Engineering, Power Systems, or related discipline.
Experience in Cable System Design Engineering for HV/EHV transmission and distribution projects. FEED experience is essential.
Some experience in regulated, quality‑assured environments, preferably with National Grid experience.
Basic understanding of onshore cable routing, cable pulling, burial risk assessments, and related analyses.
Experience with tools such as CYMCAP, WinCable, AutoCAD, Revit, GIS, and mechanical simulation tools.

Responsibilities

Contribute to the delivery of full lifecycle cable engineering packages from feasibility studies to detailed design, installation support and commissioning.
Review complex HV cable system designs, including route development, burial risk assessments, thermal, electromagnetic, and mechanical calculations.
Undertake cable rating and system studies including ampacity, short circuit forces, thermal stability and electromagnetic interference analysis.
Carry out cable pulling, jointing, cleating and installation feasibility studies.
Gain exposure to civil, structural, substation and OHL teams for integrated solutions.
Support senior team members with third‑party inspections and FAT/SAT, installation and commissioning activities.
Interface with manufacturers, suppliers and contractors to verify compliance with IEC, CIGRÉ, NG‑TPs and other standards.
