Job summary

AECOM is growing its Cables Design team and is looking for ambitious Cables System Design Engineers to join the UK and Ireland projects. You will contribute to feasibility through to commissioning, collaborating with Transmission System Operators, Distribution Network Operators, and private developers.

This role offers exposure to high‑voltage networks, design reviews, and interface with manufacturers, with a path to develop specialist expertise in IEC, CIGRÉ and NG-TPs within a global

Qualifications

• Electrical engineering degree or HNC in Electrical Engineering, Power Systems, or related discipline.
• FEED experience is essential.
• Some experience in regulated environments, preferably with National Grid experience.
• Knowledge of onshore cable routing, burial risk assessments, and related analyses (electromagnetic, thermal, stability).
• Familiarity with IEC, CIGRÉ, and NG-TPs standards.
• Experience with CYMCAP, WinCable, AutoCAD, Revit, GIS, and mechanical simulation tools.

Responsibilities

• Contribute to full lifecycle cable engineering packages from feasibility to commissioning.
• Review HV cable system designs including route development, burial risk, and thermal/EM analyses.
• Undertake cable rating and system studies (ampacity, short circuit, thermal stability).
• Carry out cable pulling, jointing, cleating, and installation feasibility studies.
• Collaborate with civil, structural, substation, and OHL teams for integrated solutions.
• Support third-party inspections and FAT/SAT, installation, and commissioning activities.
• Interface with manufacturers and contractors to verify IEC, CIGRÉ, NG-TPs compliance.
