Job summary

SSEN Transmission in Scotland is seeking a Principal Engineer – Electrical Plant to shape technical policy and support the delivery of high‑voltage transmission projects. You will own and improve technical specifications for substation electrical plant and act as Technical Authority.

The role requires an Electrical Engineering degree and Chartered Engineer status, with proven design, testing and standards experience on AIS, GIS, and FACTS/HVDC systems at 145 kV+.

Qualifications

• Degree in Electrical Engineering or related field with Chartered Engineer status or working towards it.
• Strong experience in design, specification, testing and application of electrical plant (AIS, GIS, transformers, FACTS/HVDC).
• Understanding of transmission standards and ability to write technical specifications/guidance notes.
• Experience with design/testing, installation or maintenance of transmission voltage plant is a plus.
• Ability to collaborate across engineering, asset, operations and manufacturers.

Responsibilities

• Own and improve technical specifications for substation electrical plant and act as Technical Authority.
• Review designs and type testing against network requirements; ensure safety and compliance.
• Support Design Authority reviews for safe, fit-for-purpose substation and system designs.
• Collaborate with engineering, asset, operations and manufacturers to resolve technical challenges.
• Provide technical consultancy, mentor colleagues and represent SSEN Transmission in industry forums.
• Represent SSEN Transmission at industry events and bring back insights to strengthen our engineering approach.
