Job summary

National Grid plc is seeking an Asset Engineering Manager for HV Switchgear to lead the asset lifecycle strategy and oversee a team of asset specialists. The role requires delivering robust policies, specifications and intervention plans to keep the transmission network safe and reliable.

You will influence investment decisions, drive continuous improvement and ensure regulatory compliance, while managing cross-functional relationships across engineering, operations and external partners.

Qualifications

• Experience in asset engineering, asset management or asset strategy within the electricity sector.
• Strong knowledge of high‑voltage network assets, including switchgear asset management or lifecycle planning.
• Experience in regulated utility environments such as TO/TO, DNO or similar.
• Proven leadership of diverse technical teams with a development mindset.
• Structured asset lifecycle management principles and risk-based decision making.
• Technical credibility to influence subject matter experts at scale.
• Ability to drive long-term investment planning and asset health reviews.
• Excellent communication and collaboration across engineering, operations and regulators.
• Experience engaging senior stakeholders across functions.

Responsibilities

• Lead and develop a team of asset engineering specialists with a strong safety culture.
• Maintain technical specifications, standards and policies for lifecycle management of switchgear assets.
• Define asset class strategies to inform investments and intervention plans.
• Oversee type registrations and manage technical derogations as needed.
• Lead asset health reviews and risk-based decision making across the fleet.
• Sponsor build and non-build solutions aligning with policy requirements.
• Develop standardised engineering solutions for asset interventions.
• Own asset data quality and support digital asset management initiatives.
• Provide strategic technical guidance and risk management across the portfolio.
• Build relationships with internal and external stakeholders including regulators.
