Job summary

National Grid plc is seeking an Asset Engineering Manager for HV Switchgear to lead the asset lifecycle strategy and oversee a team of asset specialists. The role requires delivering robust policies, specifications and intervention plans to keep the transmission network safe and reliable.

You will influence investment decisions, drive continuous improvement and ensure regulatory compliance, while managing cross-functional relationships across engineering, operations and external partners.

Qualifications

• Experience in asset engineering, asset management or asset strategy within the electricity sector.
• Strong knowledge of high‑voltage network assets, including switchgear asset management or lifecycle planning.
• Experience in regulated utility environments such as TO/TO, DNO or similar.
• Proven leadership of diverse technical teams with a development mindset.
• Structured asset lifecycle management principles and risk-based decision making.
• Technical credibility to influence subject matter experts at scale.

National Grid is recruiting an Asset Engineering Manager - HV Switchgear - Hybrid flexible working options with regular travel to Warwick.

Job Purpose

As an Asset Engineering Manager, you'll lead the asset lifecycle strategy for our switchgear asset fleet, ensuring critical transmission network infrastructure remains safe, reliable and capable of supporting the future energy system.

Leading a team of asset specialists, you'll be responsible for developing and maintaining asset policies, technical specifications and intervention strategies that maximise whole-life value. You'll combine strategic asset management expertise with strong leadership skills to influence investment decisions, drive continuous improvement and ensure asset performance meets business, operational and regulatory requirements.

Working across engineering, operations, capital delivery and external stakeholders, you'll play a key role in shaping the future of our network and enabling the transition to a cleaner, more resilient energy system.

What you'll do

• Lead, develop and support a team of asset engineering specialists, fostering a strong safety culture and high-performance environment.
• Maintain and develop technical specifications, standards and policies that support effective lifecycle management of switchgear assets.
• Define and deliver asset class strategies that inform investment decisions, asset health assessments and long‑term intervention plans.
• Oversee type registration activities for assets within your portfolio and manage any required technical derogations.
• Lead the asset health review process, ensuring robust, risk-based decision making across the asset fleet.
• Develop and sponsor efficient build and non-build solutions that align with policy requirements and asset management objectives.
• Support the development of standardised engineering solutions for asset interventions across the network.
• Own asset data within your portfolio, driving data quality improvements and supporting digital asset management initiatives.
• Provide strategic technical guidance, financial oversight and risk management across your asset portfolio.
• Build effective relationships with internal and external stakeholders, including suppliers, regulators and industry partners.
• Monitor emerging technologies, industry trends and best practices, identifying opportunities to improve asset performance and lifecycle management approaches.
• Ensure the team has the capability, capacity and development opportunities required to deliver current and future business objectives.

About you

We're looking for an experienced engineering or asset management leader with a strong understanding of transmission and distribution assets and the challenges associated with managing critical infrastructure in a regulated environment.

You’ll bring:

• Experience in asset engineering, asset management or asset strategy within the electricity sector.
• Strong knowledge of high‑voltage network assets, including exposure to switchgear asset management, maintenance, asset health assessments or lifecycle planning.
• Experience working within a Transmission Owner, Transmission Operator, Distribution Network Operator (DNO) or similar regulated utility environment.
• Proven leadership experience, with the ability to lead, develop and inspire diverse teams of technical professionals.
• A strong understanding of asset lifecycle management principles, risk-based decision making and long‑term investment planning.
• The technical credibility to challenge, influence and guide subject matter experts while maintaining a strategic view across a broad asset portfolio.
• Experience influencing and engaging senior stakeholders across engineering, operations, regulation and delivery functions.
• A structured and detail-oriented approach, capable of managing multiple priorities, risks and technical challenges.
• Knowledge of asset policy development, intervention planning and non-load related investment strategies.
• Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to build strong relationships across the business and industry.

What you'll get

Up to £85,000 dependent on experience.

As well as your base salary, you will receive a bonus of up to 30% of your salary for stretch performance, a competitive contributory pension scheme where we will double match your contribution to a maximum company contribution of 12%.
