Overview

We are excited to offer a fantastic opportunity for a Highways Maintenance Operative Apprentice to join our Traffic Management account based in Ecclesfield.

Starting Salary: £28,729.00 per annum (Subject to review)

Location: Ecclesfield Depot, S35 9YR

Working hours per week: Monday – Friday 7:30 – 16:30. 45hr/week

Start date: April 2026

Apprenticeship Link: Lead traffic management operative / Skills England

As part of your Apprenticeship, you will be enrolled onto a Lead Traffic Management Operative level 2 apprenticeship which will take approximately 21 months to complete. You will be fully supported by our partnered training provider to achieve this qualification, having 1-2-1 advice and support, e-learning materials, and a whole team of experts on hand for advice and technical knowledge at your office.

The partnership has evolved, whilst continuing to maintain a high-quality service and delivery framework resulting in a further five-year contract extension from October 2024, including an extra £30m on top of normal annual funding.

What you will do

• Gain experience in all methods of traffic management; Give and take, Priority, Stop/Go boards, Portable traffic signals, Convoy working, Road closures, Lane closures and diversions
• Learn how to carry out risk assessments and method statements on works involving traffic management
• Assist with daily vehicle checks – to ensure cleanliness and tidiness of vehicle and the safety of the driver and passenger
• Be happy to assist the public, directing them through safe site lines when required.
• Ensure that all activities associated with the job are carried out according to laid down procedures where possible. Identify areas that can be improved and report to your line manager
• Promote a positive company image whilst at work (via wearing of company clothing, attitude, and site cleanliness)
• Understand safe Systems of work methods and best practice procedures

What you will bring

• If you do not hold GCSE/functional skills qualifications, you must achieve a minimum of entry level 3 in Maths and English during initial assessment
• Full UK driver’s license
• Passion for developing your skills both professional and personally.
• Have the enthusiasm to be part of a high performing team and a drive for success
• Basic knowledge of Health & Safety
