Job description

Greensand Surgery is seeking an experienced health care assistant to join our friendly nursing team, on a part time basis for maximum of 24 hours per week over three days. With previous experience in primary care, the ideal candidate will have completed a healthcare qualification or be working towards this.

The role of the HCA is to support the practice nursing and administrative teams in the delivery of clinical and administrative services.

Main duties of the job
  • Venepuncture
  • Undertake NHS health checks
  • Collect specimens and urinalysis as directed
  • Carry out baseline observations such as pulse oximetry, blood pressure, temperature & pulse rate, recording findings accurately
  • Facilitate routine & 24-hour BP monitoring, advising patients accordingly
  • Undertake wound care, dressings & other clinical tasks
  • Support the practice nurse with the management of chronic disease clinics
  • Carry out BMI checks
  • Act as a chaperone
  • When trained, administer flu vaccinations
  • When trained, carry out ear irrigation under the supervision of the practice nurse
  • Carry out ECGs as requested
  • Ensure specimens are recorded & ready for onward transportation
  • Provide support during minor operations/implants/coil fits
  • Order stock
  • Ensure clinical waste is removed from clinical areas & sharps bins replaced in accordance with the organisations IPC policy
  • Deliver opportunistic health promotion
  • First diabetic checks, when trained

Greensand Surgery is a semi-rural, GMS, practice in mid-Bedfordshire with just over 10,000 patients.

We are a dynamic, hard-working team whose aim is to provide high quality patient centred care. The partnership is supportive and cohesive and we have a full complement of enthusiastic team members. We provide a comprehensive range of medical services for our patients as well as meeting targets for the new contract. The practice consists of three partners and four salaried GPs, a dedicated nursing team, clinical pharmacist, and admin staff.

Person Specification
Qualifications
  • Successful completion of the Care Certificate, or working towards, as indicated by the CQC.
  • A qualification in phlebotomy/venepuncture.
Experience
  • Experience of working within a GP practice.
  • Strong clinical skills.
  • Confidence and competence in all HCA duties required for the post.
  • Excellent patient-facing communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Consistently confidential manner, as well as a compassionate and respectful approach, placing a high value on the dignity of patients, relatives, carers and colleagues.
  • Ability to work independently and determine own workload priorities, as well as working as part of a multi-disciplinary team.
  • Strong organisational and time management skills.
