Forest School Leader & Forest School Assistant

Location: Rochdale & surrounding areas (Greater Manchester)

Contract: Temporary and Permanent

Hours: Full-time and part-time roles available

Salary: Competitive, dependent on role and experience

We are excited to be recruiting Forest School Leaders and Forest School Assistants for a new and innovative school offering inspiring outdoor learning experiences across woodland and green spaces in the Rochdale area.

This is a fantastic opportunity for individuals who are passionate about nature-based education, child development, and delivering high-quality outdoor learning sessions.

About the Roles
Forest School Leader

As a Forest School Leader, you will plan, lead and deliver engaging outdoor learning and Forest School sessions for children of varying ages and abilities. You will work across different outdoor sites within the local area, helping to establish and maintain safe, stimulating, and meaningful woodland environments.

Forest School Assistant

As an Assistant, you will support the Leader in day-to-day delivery, preparation of activities, site maintenance and supervision of groups. This is an excellent role for someone at the beginning of their Forest School journey or looking to develop into a leadership position in the future.

Key Responsibilities (Leaders & Assistants)
  • Plan, prepare and deliver high-quality Forest School and outdoor learning sessions tailored to children’s individual needs.
  • Support children’s holistic development through nature-based play, exploration, and hands‑on activities.
  • Help maintain woodland and outdoor learning spaces, ensuring they remain safe, nurturing and inviting.
  • Assist with risk assessments for sites, tools and activities, reviewing and updating as needed.
  • Contribute to the safe and appropriate use of all Forest School tools and equipment.
  • Record, observe and track children’s progress, sharing information with the wider staff team and families when required.
  • Communicate effectively and positively with children, colleagues, parents and external partners.
  • Support volunteers, assistants or staff members involved in sessions (Leader role).
  • Participate in ongoing professional development and contribute to continuous improvement of the outdoor learning programme.
  • Adhere to all organisational safeguarding, health & safety and operational policies.
Qualifications & Experience
Forest School Leader
  • Forest School Level 3 qualification (or working towards).
  • Level 3 qualification in Childcare, Education or equivalent.
  • At least 2 years’ experience working with children in an educational, childcare or outdoor setting.
  • Strong understanding of Forest School principles and outdoor learning pedagogy.
Forest School Assistant
  • Level 2 or 3 Childcare / Education qualification desirable.
  • Experience supporting children in outdoor, educational or care settings.
  • Willingness to work outdoors in all seasons and support practical woodland activities.
For all applicants
  • A genuine passion for the outdoors, nature and child-centred learning.
  • Ability to sustain moderate levels of physical activity in varied weather conditions.
  • Excellent communication skills and a collaborative approach.
  • A full UK driving licence and access to a vehicle is desirable due to travel between sites.
