Economic Adviser (Energy and Natural Resources) – Commonwealth Secretariat, London, England, UK

About the Role

The Commonwealth Secretariat’s Climate Change and Ocean Directorate (CCOD) seeks an experienced Economic Adviser to deliver advisory and technical services that support Commonwealth countries in advancing climate‑resilient economic development, improving energy security, reducing energy poverty, strengthening social and environmental protections, limiting climate change impacts, and securing a just energy transition.

Key Responsibilities
  • Work individually and within multi‑disciplinary teams on a portfolio of projects in the Energy and Natural Resources (ENR) Section.
  • Design and implement governance reforms in mining sectors, including deep seabed mining of critical minerals.
  • Provide expertise on governance and regulation of energy sectors (oil, gas, renewable).
  • Support revenue‑management initiatives such as sovereign wealth funds.
  • Develop and promote emission‑reduction strategies, carbon taxation mechanisms, and climate‑finance solutions.
  • Advise on energy‑transition planning and the implementation of low‑carbon energy systems.
Qualifications and Experience
  • Post‑graduate degree in economics, business, or a related field.
  • Minimum of ten years’ senior‑level experience engaging high‑level counterparts in an international context (international organization, government ministry, or private sector).
  • Minimum of five years’ experience leading and managing projects in energy and natural resources or a related field.
  • Citizen of a Commonwealth country.
  • Willingness to undertake frequent overseas travel.
