Overview

Steel Structures Draughtsman with Tekla experience sought by a successful family-run business based in St Albans. The role supports a small team in producing accurate technical drawings, 3D models, and fabrication details for structural steel projects.

Role Purpose

To prepare accurate technical drawings, 3D models, and fabrication details for structural steel projects, ensuring designs are practical, buildable, and compliant with industry standards. The draughtsman will work closely with engineers, fabricators, and site teams to deliver drawings that support efficient manufacturing and installation.

Key Responsibilities

• Interpret engineer's calculations and specifications into accurate drawings.
• Ensure drawings are fully compliant with BS EN 1090-2 and CE marking requirements.
• Produce detailed 2D and 3D CAD drawings for structural steel components, assemblies, and general arrangements.
• Develop fabrication drawings, cutting lists, and material schedules for workshop production.
• Create GA (General Arrangement) drawings for client approval and site installation.
• Liaise with project managers, engineers, and workshop staff to clarify design details and resolve queries.
• Revise drawings promptly in response to design changes or client requirements.
• Participate in design reviews, highlighting potential fabrication or installation challenges.
• Maintain accurate drawing records, revisions, and digital file management.
• Contribute to continuous improvement of CAD standards and draughting procedures.

Required Skills & Experience

• Proven experience as a steel structural draftsman / detailer.
• Proficiency in CAD software (AutoCAD essential; Tekla Structures or Advance Steel desirable).
• Strong understanding of structural steel fabrication processes and connections.
• Ability to interpret engineering drawings and technical specifications.
• Knowledge of relevant codes and standards (BS EN 1090-2, steelwork tolerances, welding standards).
• Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
• Good communication skills, able to coordinate between office, workshop, and site teams.
• Organised, able to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines.
