Job description

You will work collaboratively to deliver an inclusive and responsive service, ensuring excellent customer service. You will have a primary responsibility for a particular academic area but will work as part of a cross‑university Doctoral School team to support all academic areas as needed.

This is an exciting opportunity in a varied and busy role supporting the University’s postgraduate research community as part of a dedicated and supportive team.

The successful candidate will have the opportunity for involvement in a broad range of activities; to develop skills and contribute significantly to the service the team provides to diverse stakeholders.

Excellent communication and organisational skills are integral to your role, where you will manage effective administrative processes. You will have strong IT, numerical and administration skills, provide an excellent customer service and work well as part of a team. The ability to use your own initiative, manage your own workload and prioritise effectively is key to this role, as is a high level of attention to detail.

This role would suit candidates who enjoy working on a variety of different tasks on an everyday basis, along with work around regulations, policy and process.

The Doctoral School

The Doctoral School Team comprises around 20 staff based in Research and Innovation Services. The Doctoral School has oversight of research degrees provision and the associated Regulations, policies and procedures, and PGR student support. The Doctoral School is led by an academic Director, and the Doctoral School Team works closely with academic PGR leads across the University to provide an efficient and customer‑focused service to students and staff. The team has two main areas:

  • Doctoral Operations – who provide support to PGRs and staff on all aspects of PGR student administration, including applications and Admissions, scholarships, guidance on policies and processes, events and wellbeing support. Within the Doctoral Operations area, we have dedicated points of contact for each academic College, but staff support work flexibly to support other areas as needed.
  • Doctoral Regulations and Policy – who have oversight of the Research Degree Regulations and PGR-specific policies and guidance, support Research Degrees Committee, maintain the student records and manage the final examination process.
