Job description
Deputy Ward Manager (Maple Ward)

We are seeking a dynamic and dedicated individual for the pivotal role as Deputy Ward Manager at our values‑driven Trust. This is a unique opportunity for someone to help shape the future of mental health services while developing a career in a supportive and innovative environment committed to inclusion, equity and active anti‑racism.

This role is part of an innovative Short Stay mixed‑gender psychiatric ward operating on a maximum 28‑day admission framework. The model integrates evidence‑based approaches including robust gate‑keeping processes, intensive multidisciplinary ശ്ര (MDT) working, the Red to Green discharge facilitation approach, and strong integration with Home Treatment Teams (HTT) for admission prevention and early supported discharge.

Job responsibilities
  • Work autonomously within the parameters of the role, leading and supporting junior staff and the wider care team to implement the delivery of quality nursing care.
  • Contribute to the physical, psychological, social, recreational and spiritual care of service users in a recovery‑focused way through therapeutic engagement and activities.
  • Ensure that the fundamentals of care are met – nutrition, deyâ hydration, hygiene, comfort, emotional and social support.
  • Co‑ordinate and evaluate collaborative patient‑centred care; obtain feedback and improve care plans with the MDT.
  • Provide accurate information about care in an accessible format to patients and their relatives/carers.
  • Liaise positively with members of the MDT and partner organisations.
  • Administer and diaspora monitor medication side‑effects; monitor service‑user compliance.
  • Maintain safe custody of medicines, sharps and clinical equipment; report all incidents following Trust policy.
  • Lead and support/teach junior staff on risk assessment and risk management, making decisions based on research evidence, individual service‑user context and clinical judgement.
Education and Qualification
  • Registered Adult nurse and/or Registered Mental Health nurse and/or Registered Learning Disabilities nurse.
Experience and Knowledge
  • Experience of research‑based/reflective practice and ability to use supervision to reflect on skills, attitude and knowledge and develop these by using evidence‑based practice.
  • Significant relevant clinical experience.
  • Evidence of continuing عز professionơ development.
  • Experience as a preceptor/mentor.
  • Experience of taking responsibility for a ward/clinical unit.
  • Experience of engaging/supporting clinical research projects.
  • Experience of supporting practice development in clinical areas.
