Job Description

Hybrid working - 3 days a week in our Newcastle office

At Sage, content designers play a critical role in making our software easy to use for millions of small and medium-sized business owners around the world. We are passionate about creating clear, compelling content that provides customers with the information they need, when they need it, and in a format they expect.

Our content designers are part of multidisciplinary Agile product teams, working closely with UX designers, translators, product managers, business analysts/solution designers, engineering and quality assurance, as well as other teams, such as customer support and learning services.

We are looking for a Content Designer to create and manage content for one of our AI-powered software solutions in the Small Business segment that is used across Europe.

In this role, you will:

  • Design and refine the content in our software: this includes creating in-app microcopy such as text on buttons, in menus, helpful tips, and messages that guide users. Your focus will be making it clear, accurate, and easy to understand for everyone following accessibility standards.
  • Write and review digital content: write customer-facing digital product guides to help customers use the product, messages to guide the user through the product, and What’s New Guides where needed.
  • Prepare content for a global audience: write with an understanding of localisation and translation. Coordinate the translation of content into European languages for countries where the product is available. This involves collaborating with translators.
  • Help shape the user journey: understand how users—ranging from first-time users to experts—learn what information they need at each step to complete their tasks successfully.
  • Work with the design team: collaborate with UX designers to create journey maps, wireframes, prototypes and design user interfaces for releases.
  • Learn from our users: work with and support user researchers, analysing and iterating content based on data and usability findings.
  • Help lead the design and implementation of strategies: work with stakeholders including the UX Team Lead, Content Design Team Lead and Translation Team Lead to evaluate current strategies and content processes to ensure business requirements are met. Propose and implement improvements as needed.
  • Build relationships with stakeholders to understand business requirements and share content design strategies and designs.
  • Participate in quality assurance procedures to ensure content is accurate and effective before products or features are released.
  • Use and contribute to content guidelines: use our writing style guides, design standards, and content tools to ensure consistency across Sage products and contribute to the Content Community of Practice.

Opportunities we offer

We're committed to helping you learn and grow in your career:

  • Real-world impact: Your work will directly help small business owners use our products more effectively.
  • Collaborative environment: You'll be part of friendly, cross-functional teams with experts from different areas, ready to share their knowledge.
  • Learning and development: We provide dedicated time and resources for you to learn new skills, explore content design concepts, and attend relevant events.
  • Supportive team: You'll receive support and guidance from your product team as well as content designers in the wider Experience Design team.
  • Make a difference: Participate in company-wide initiatives, including volunteer days, to contribute to our communities.

For this role, you’ll possess a combination of technical writing and UX writing skills. You will:

  • Use evidence and research from customers and subject matter experts to deliver accurate, accessible content across the end-to-end user journey that meets user needs and business objectives. This will include in-app content in the software, as well as digital help and product guidance, messages to guide the user, and support for What’s New guides, as needed.
  • Work with multidisciplinary teams to understand, deliver, test and review features and products, sometimes to simultaneous deadlines.
  • Collaborate with UX designers to create journey maps, user flows and prototypes.
  • Design content with an understanding of localisation and translation and collaborate with translators to translate content into the different languages needed for the product.
  • Contribute to the development of content strategy, templates, processes and content patterns, working with stakeholders to ensure business needs are met.
  • Learn, use, and contribute to resources such as the Sage Style Guide, Design System, and Content Design Community of Practice templates as you work.

Essential Skills and experience

  • A strong understanding of user-centered design.
  • Experience in writing, editing and publishing digital content, including UX writing for in-product content and help guides for customers.
  • A passion for creating great customer experiences and helping users complete tasks quickly and confidently.
  • Curiosity in, and awareness of, AI and how it can help us improve customer experience and workflows.
  • Experience using evidence, data and research to make content decisions across the end-to-end user journey (e.g., user research and analytics).
  • Experience using style guides and tone-of-voice guides to deliver content.
  • Awareness of accessibility guidelines and a passion for creating content that works for everyone.
  • Self-motivated with strong time management skills and the ability to work on multiple projects and adapt to change.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills and ability to work as part of a team.
  • Analytical with strong problem-solving skills and the ability to find information when needed to design accurate content.
  • Proactive about learning and development.

Desirable

It would be helpful, but is not essential, to have the following experience and skills:

  • Fluent in a European language, preferably Spanish.
  • Understanding of localisation and translation, and experience collaborating with translators; experience with the tool Phrase is desirable.
  • Experience using accessibility guidelines to create content.
  • Experience creating, leading the implementation, and evaluating content strategies.
  • Knowledge of Agile methodologies, including Jira and Confluence.
  • Experience with design tools such as Miro and Figma.
  • Experience in using design systems and patterns.

If you’re passionate about user-centred design, and want to make an impact on a global scale, we want to hear from you!
