This substantive post offers the opportunity to deliver high-quality critical care to severely injured patients across London, including children, as part of a consultant-led team providing a 7‑day service via helicopter and rapid response vehicles. The role also includes participation in major incident preparedness, clinical governance, and service development.

Main Duties of the Job

The successful candidate will provide expert clinical care, contribute to the training and supervision of doctors and paramedics, and uphold the highest standards of patient safety. You will work collaboratively with colleagues across Barts Health, London Ambulance Service, and the wider trauma network, as well as represent the service regionally and internationally. Person Specification

Qualifications Essential

  • MBBS or equivalent
  • FRCEM, FRCA, FRCS, FFICM or equivalent
  • GMC Specialist registration
  • Demonstrable knowledge of contemporary acute trauma care and prehospital care.
  • Demonstration of the ability to work in the LAA Prehospital system at consultant level including previous experience of supervision and training doctors in the pre‑hospital environment

Experience Essential

  • Have at least 2 years experience of working in prehospital care
  • A six-month secondment with London's Air Ambulance system as a doctor,
  • A substantive consultant appointment in base specialty and the ability to accommodate the demands of two roles to support the needs of the LAA service
  • Recent currency with London's Air Ambulance System (within the last 3 years)

Experience Desirable

  • Training in endovascular resuscitation techniques
  • Completed a recognised training programme in pre‑hospital emergency medicine
  • A six month secondment with another UK HEMS/ pre‑hospital service
  • Six months' experience in an international HEMS/ pre‑hospital/ retrieval service

Knowledge Essential

  • Demonstrate an understanding of non‑technical skills related to patient safety
  • Demonstrate a robust history of reflecting and learning from patient experiences with peer and senior review
  • Be conversant with terms and concepts related to risk management systems

Knowledge Desirable

  • Experience of leading patients safety or quality improvement programs.

Skills Essential

  • Comprehensive set of skills relevant to the care of sick and injured patients in the pre‑hospital environment
  • Portfolio evidence of competence in the independent delivery of safe pre‑hospital anaesthesia
  • Ability to avoid, mediate and resolve situations potentially leading to conflict
  • Evidence of ability to integrate well into a team, to demonstrate effective leadership and to contribute positively to the culture of the service
  • Flexibility and aptitude to contribute to the long term success of the service.

Skills Desirable

  • Portfolio of evidence of competence in the delivery of safe endovascular resuscitation and advanced vascular access, including at least a desire to train in extracorporeal life support
  • A good level of personal fitness, including an ability to complete bleep test up to level 5

  • Have a demonstrable commitment to prehospital trauma quality improvement or quality assurance
  • Demonstrates a deep understanding of prehospital governance with evidence of engagement and leadership in clinical governance.
  • Able to provide evidence of clinical audit and demonstrate understanding of impact and challenges this brings
  • Ability to apply research outcomes to clinical problems encountered in prehospital care
  • Commitment to maintain high quality documentation and data systems for audit, governance and research
  • Experience of teaching and training undergraduates, junior doctors and allied professionals
