Our laboratory is a designated centre for many cancer sites and holds full UKAS accreditation. The laboratory receives over 40,000 histology, 1,600 diagnostic cytology and 900 autopsy requests annually. It performs a wide range of molecular techniques and has a subspecialty reporting system. Applicants from both specialised and generalised backgrounds will be considered, but an interest in gynae and/or head/neck is preferable; interest in haematopathology or uropathology is also welcomed.

With a proven track record of improving the service, notable achievements in the last two years include:

  • Molecular automated PCR for theranostic work (e.g. Idylla® BRAF) and tumour expression analysis (e.g. ALK in lung carcinoma)
  • Provision of a EUS and EBUS rapid onsite evaluation service for pancreatic, lung, adrenal & head/neck
  • Pathology support for the Bowel Cancer Screening programme including age expansion and Bowel Scope Screening
  • Collaborative working with neighbouring hospitals as part of the South 1 NHSI Pathology Network. This includes the procurement of an end‑to‑end digital histopathology solution connecting all five Trusts within the region, facilitating case sharing, MDT discussion and expert second opinion. Digital histopathology will be installed and implemented in 2024.

The department is actively involved in the delivery of the education programme of the University of Exeter and this post will be part of this provision. For new consultants the job plan will include 2.5 SPAs for the first year.

Any applicant who is unable for personal reasons to work full‑time will be eligible to be considered for the post. If appointed, modification of the job content will be discussed on a personal basis with the Trust in consultation with the consultant colleague.
