Job description

Overview

We are seeking an enthusiastic, motivated, and dynamic Consultant to join our Care of the Elderly team to develop and expand our geriatric services. The job plan provides flexibility to develop this service within departmental and Trust objectives. The Trust is a Major Trauma Centre and support will be offered by geriatricians; you will have no responsibility for major trauma patients. You will be encouraged to join our consultant leadership and management training programme.

Responsibilities

• Provide clinical and managerial leadership to an acute elderly care ward. Provide oversight and clinical supervision for junior doctors attached to the ward.
• Carry out general geriatrics, falls, specialty or 'hot' clinic. Opportunities to develop an area of subspeciality (e.g., continence, frailty 'hot' clinics, dementia).
• Participate in the General (Internal) Medicine 1:18 consultant on-call rota at Royal Preston Hospital, including conducting the 'Post-Take' ward round.
• Develop services reflecting priorities within available resources.
• Provide professional lead, with colleagues, regarding development of protocols/guidelines and practice in elderly care medicine.
• Lead audit and quality improvement activities, participate in morbidity and mortality and clinical governance meetings.
• Engage fully in annual appraisal, continuing professional development and revalidation.

Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is a major acute Trust in the North West of England with 1,270 beds for a resident population of 390,000 and a regional population of 1.5 million. We are the tertiary centre for major trauma, neuro-sciences, renal, oncology and plastic surgery/burns for Lancashire and South Cumbria. Undergraduate medical student teaching commenced here in 2003; there are opportunities for research and development integral to Teaching Hospital status.

There are two main hospital sites: Royal Preston Hospital and Chorley & South Ribble District General Hospital.
