Go back East Suffolk and North Essex NHS Foundation Trust

Consultant Clinical Scientist for Microbiology

The closing date is 01 June 2025

We are looking for a HCPC Registered Microbiology Clinical Scientist to join our ESNEFT's cutting-edge pathology services. You will reflect our forward-thinking approach to healthcare, as well as our willingness to embrace the latest technology to improve outcomes and the patient experience.

A generous recruitment incentive payment and relocation package may be available.

Our state-of-the-art labs at our acute sites are supplied with top quality equipment and are managed in-house as NHS facilities, giving us greater flexibility to respond quickly when urgent tests are needed. Our new patient record system Epic, due for introduction next year, will also have a major impact, further transforming the way we work by bringing all of our speciality reports and patient information into one, easily accessible place, in turn saving vital time for our dedicated staff.

In Microbiology you will be given a unique opportunity to use your experience to help shape our ambitious programme of service development. Following a £5m investment in a molecular facility, the department is working on a programme of repatriation to Ipswich Hospital from other labs. Our £64m Essex and Suffolk Elective Orthopaedic Centre is also due to opening Autumn 2024. This brand new facility will be one of the largest of its kind in Europe, and will offer dedicated microbiology opportunities for anyone interested in complex cases to further their career in the very latest surroundings.

Main duties of the job

We are looking for an experienced Consultant with FRCPath and PhD. If you are close to achieving this or believe your qualifications are equivalent, we may consider your application. This post will be working across Colchester and Ipswich Hospitals.

You will work in collaboration with our strong clinical, scientific, laboratory and quality teams to actively support the Clinical lead in further developing the clinical microbiology service and in the provision of training to more junior clinical staff as part of our succession planning.

Your role will be essential to help lead, deliver and develop our busy and expanding services for the benefit of patients and is key to our succession planning over the next five years.

Participate in the duty microbiologist rota and provide a Consultant Clinical Advisory Service in Clinical Microbiology for the diagnosis investigation and treatment of patients to medical, nursing and other healthcare staff within this and other hospitals and in primary care. The provision of clinical advice will include guidance on the interpretation of results and the selection of further tests to aid the diagnosis and treatment of patients.

Our pathology department is part of the collaborative East Coast Pathology Network (see attached document)
