Construction Technician

Dumfries | £33,159.26 pro rata | 19 hours per week | 40 weeks per year | Permanent

Dumfries and Galloway College is looking to appoint a committed and skilled Construction Technician to support our Construction team at the Dumfries Campus.

Hours

08:45-16:30 - standard working hours, can be split over 3 - 5 days, working pattern to be agreed

This is a practical and varied role where you will play a key part in maintaining workshop facilities, ensuring that machinery and equipment are in good working order, and that materials are prepared and ready for use. You will help create a safe and well-organised environment that supports effective learning.

Key Responsibilities
  • Pricing, ordering, and receipting of construction materials.
  • Preparing and maintaining materials and resources for classes.
  • General workshop duties, including safe storage and housekeeping.
  • Maintenance of workshop machinery and equipment.
  • Supporting lecturers in the delivery of practical sessions.
  • Completing COSHH and risk assessments in line with college policy.
  • Operating a counterbalance forklift to move and manage materials safely.
  • Using IT systems and Microsoft Office products to manage stock, orders, and workshop records.
  • Taking opportunities to contribute as a First Aider or Fire Marshal (training provided).
Essential Knowledge and Experience
  • Practical knowledge and experience across key construction trades – particularly bricklaying, plumbing, and painting.
  • Confident IT skills, including use of Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Strong organisational skills and the ability to manage materials and resources efficiently.
  • A proactive and safety-conscious approach to workshop operations.
  • Effective teamwork and communication skills.
Qualifications
  • A minimum of SCQF Level 5 (or equivalent) in a construction-related qualification is required.
  • A Level 6 or above trade qualification may provide future progression opportunities within Further Education.
Desirable
  • Forklift licence (training available if not already held).
  • Previous experience in a workshop or technical support environment.
  • Health and Safety or First Aid certification.
