Responsibilities

You will work as part of a team progressing each file from receipt of papers from the insurer client to resolution of the claim. The role will include:

1. Working with the Lead Lawyer to manage a caseload of complex injury claims including high value multi-track and catastrophic injury claims involving brain injury, spinal cord injury, amputation and fatal claims.
2. Forensic analysis of voluminous quantum evidence, preparing chronologies, identifying anomalies and other relevant information across various sources and categories of evidence.
3. Using your existing knowledge of complex injury symptomology to identify relevant issues within medical records in order to instruct medical experts, drawing key issues to their attention.
4. Critical analysis of sources of liability evidence and identifying any gaps.
5. Drafting concise technical advice on all aspects of claim handling, including advice on indemnity, liability, quantum, causation issues, and claims resolution for strategy discussion with the Lead Lawyer.
6. Proactively identifying next steps, discussing those with the Lead Lawyer, and taking action as agreed.
7. Interviewing witnesses and drafting statements.
8. Liaising with parties involved in claims, including the insured, insurer, witnesses, etc.
9. Drafting pleadings and applications.
10. Instructing counsel and attending conferences, JSMs, mediations both remotely and in person.
11. Attending court in person or by telephone, attending trials, settlement conferences, etc., as required.
12. Delivering agreed performance targets and quality standards.
13. Delegating tasks to a Legal Assistant and/or Paralegal and supporting their development in technical ability and objectives.
14. Maintaining case management systems with up-to-date management information for clients.

Skills, Knowledge and Expertise

1. Prior experience working in the area of complex / Large Loss / CAT claims.
2. Experience of indemnity, liability (in an assisting capacity), and excellent attention to detail is essential.
3. Experience of calculating claim value using the Ogden tables is preferred.
4. Qualified solicitor, CILEX, or proven relevant legal experience is essential.
5. Experience of indemnity, liability, and quantum is essential.
6. Experience with cases involving complex medical issues is preferred.
